I agree with Tom. I overpaid for my test pipes --paid for the Tubi name I guess. Go to a muffler shop if you can like Tom says. Remember though to have them do the same for the precats as well not just the cats.

$1000 for test pipes? Geez just take out your cats and then go to a muffler shop that does stainless steel exhaust work, and have them make you up a set using you cats as a guide. They should have all the flanges that you need, and they'll probbably cost you $100 each. |

Jeff I kept the original mufflers on my 348 and just put in test pipes.... I personally don't see any reason to go further... In connecticut the emission stations are closed and no one know when they will open so I am taking advantage of it. If I have to I can easlily put cat's back on.... What state do you live?

If I was in your shoes, and I sort of am -- I have a 1990TR, I would spend the $1000 for test pipes and take out the cats and precats -- the sound and peformance increases are nice but I think a even better reason is the elimination of a cat overheat and fire. Also eliminates the annoying slow down light and the dropping off of a cylinder bank when the light comes on. After that then you can add the Tubi later on if you want -- but the test pipes alone may be loud enough for you. And yes, I did it and it sounds great and performs just like ferrarijoe says. To be accurate I have the TUBI test pipes for the cats and precats and the stock muffler system. BTW, welcome aboard. There is a wealth of TR expertise here and they help me a lot --do not hesitate to ask questions. |

Welcome aboard Jeff! I have no experience with after market exhausts or test pipes but I do have a '87 TR with a stock Euro system. Because of it being a "free-flow" exhaust, there are obviously no restrictions. The sound at idle is fantastic and at WOT it is incredible while in the car with the windows cracked open a bit! Even though there are no pre-cats or cats, adjusting the KE-Jetronic FI system is easy with a gas analyzer to meet EPA specs here in WA. State (less than 6% CO). The factory settings are 2.5% CO and 300 PPM. Joe

Ben, I agree, sound clips are needed. I removed the cat and pre-cats on my TR and fabricated a full mandrel-bent custom system. The basis for sound control is a 50 series FLOWMASTER that has superb resonance characteristics and produces awesome sound. At the Pocono raceway meet, I was told that the car had an incredible sound going down the front straight. I further wrapped the entire system in an aftermarket exhaust wrap. The response and power increase is very good. At shows, points are lost because of the system. I love it! |

A pal of mine that lives close by has an 86TR done this way, test pipes for cats and pre-cats with the stock muffler. The sound is very different, very dry, unique, but not (to me) as nice as an aftermarket system. There is also a guy around here with (IIRC an 87TR) with stock cats and NO muffler, tips straight out of the cats. Sound is near the 86TR mentioned above, but his will pass smog. A TR with a Tubi (and test pipes) driving away from me I can hear for almost a mile straight. We REALLY need to get soundclips going. -Ben

First off, Hello to everyone. I'm new to the world of Ferrari ownership. So be gentle. I see lots of people using aftermarket mufflers, then for more sound going upstream and using test pipes. Has anyone ever gone the other way and use test pipes but keep the factory muffler? It's hard to justify the cost of Tubi. Any and all comments appreciated. Jeff |
