John, If it is a cracked header that certainly would be between you and the dealer. I doubt if he will do anything unless you had a warranty with him. Ferrari hasn't been picking up any of these cracked manifolds. Maybe he knows someone through the channels to Ferrari. However you don't know for sure what the problem is. But signs point to maybe could be. I hope I'm wrong. |

John: I had the manifold crack on my 355. Jon on this chat has a good side, I forget which side. It didn't fit mine because the 96 has a different controller. Check your side, and see if it is the same one that John has that is good. I got no help from Ferrari on my blown up manifold, and ordered both sides from QV London. New cost on the manifolds was $2600 per side. QV wasx about 1400 for both, exchange. Art

I like to thank Mitch for better phrasing the sound. Yes, it is more like a "punk" than a backfire. I have a 95 355 spider with 14K miles; I got it from the dealer in Oct '01. Does any know if this should be an expense that the dealership should pickup? Many thx to everyone's input. |

I had a similar noise, but it happened at large throttle at low RPMs, sounded more like a "punk" than a back fire. I described the problem, and FoH replaced the headers. In my case, the noise was from a cracked header pipe. large throttle openings at low RPMs allowed that exhaust valve opening of that cylinder to excape the header tube into the surrounding jacket--thereby resulting in the "punk" sound. Noise was still there at high RPMs--just could not separate the noise fromother mechanical clackery going on at high RPMs. |

John, I hope this isn't the famous crack in the 355 exhaust manifolds. Going away after it warms up? Just a thought. |

TomD, you're right, especially when you drive the car through a tunnel. When we ran the LI Poker Rally, there were no "pop" sound when I shifted. I really hope this is a common thing... Brian, thanks for advice. |

Fairly typical with the Tubi install, the lower back pressure will allow the mixture to ignite when on a quick leanout such as a gear shift. Some are more noticeable than others especially if test pipes installed. |

I have a 95 355 Spider with Tubi; the car runs great and (knock on wood) no major problems. Recently I discovered that the car will make a pop noise - almost like a muffled backfire when I shift fast while under aggressive acceleration. This noise ONLY occurs when I shift from 1-2, 2-3, and maybe 3-4; the noise usually diminishes or disappears as the car warms up or when I shift normally. The best way to describe this noise is like popping a plastic bag. By no means is it as loud as a firecracker as in the case of backfiring, but its definitely noticeable to arose my concern. Thanks for your help.
