Herb, have fun at Disney World, my wife's grandma lives in Sarasota so we get there once in a while. We're on the way to the mini-Disney Wisconsin-style called Wisconsin Dells for the rest of the week. Golf, water slides and goofy tourist attractions here we come! The CV boots can wait. |

Oh, I did not damage anything, but the axle will only turn a few degrees with the washers omitted before the end of the bolt hits the housing and stops it. A temporary head scratcher. Humans are not perfect, thus the invention of the funnel. I am going to Disney World from the 5th til the 14th. You guys be careful. |

Thanks for the help. Herb, I saw the washers and was puzzeled but now I know what they're for! Will be diligent in marking them or may attempt the replacement from the wheel side without monkeying with them. How much was that new transaxle case! Steve, Appreciate your suggestion, I'll see how easy the bolts come off. I've got all 3 adobe manuals from the Jenkins site downloaded and printed. Still looking for the originals. That's how I got this far! Guess I just wanted to hear from you all that what I was seeing was correct. Given the distance to, cost of and delay involved with a dealer or qualified mechanics I will have to continue to be DIY'er. Tofosi1 even called with suggestions about how to free up the probably frozen and high torque nuts, what tools I'll need and walked me through the procedure. I really appreciate the input and being able to bounce some things off you guys before jumping in. Have a great holiday! |

On my 308 the left inner joint where it attaches to the transaxle has flat washers on the bolts where as the other bolts do not. Reason being that if these washers are not installed in their original positions, the bolts will hit the transaxle case. Ask me how I know. |

Gene -- IMHO it's easiest overall to remove the complete axle assembly and do the boots/clamps/relubing work on the bench (and do both boots as Herbert suggested as the parts are very cheap compared to the labor/time). There's a snap ring on each end of the axle shaft that holds the CV joint inner race onto the axle shaft. Go to: http://www.ferrari.jenkins.org/books/308_parts.pdf Table 30 (which is about 72 of 150 in the Adobe .pdf file) for a illustration that shows the snap-ring/axle/CV joint as assembled. If your plan is to keep doing this level of DIYing, you should really consider getting yourself an SPC and a 308GT4 WSM (110/75). |

Thank's for the reply. I assume that the allen head bolts need to be removed and the axle will drop off? Do you need to take both ends off or can you just take off the interior side which looks a little easier to access and slide the new boots on? Is there a lock ring to remove the CV joint or are the bolts all there is to it? |

This is no problem. The boots are available from T.Rutlands. Go ahead and replace both on the defective side. You will need some metric allen head tools but it is really simple. The grease is available at almost any parts store. |

On my 1979 308 GTS I have a 1 inch tear in the large CV axle boot up next to the clamp, and am loosing some grease. Is this a "do not drive" situation? Is this something I could replace? Does anyone have any experience in replaceing these? Would you know the required part numbers - boot, clamp, nuts, snap-ring(?) Is there a replacement for the MOLYKOTE BR 2 grease? What are the steps? Any special tools required? Thanks for any help you can give. |
