Took the train to visit Rob Garven in Santa Barbara. It was 12 hours late.

Hans,

Are you going to take the De-rail Special that Amtrak in running? I know they only offer that fare in the gulf states but I hear they are going to start offering it around the country due to the budget cuts.

Scratch the 14th comment. That would be Thursday. Her meeting is on the weekend. I'll beg and plead.

I thought it was the 14th. My other half has a *potential* meeting in Portland. I might be able to day-trip to Seattle on Amtrak (for you Canadians, that's a train service that sometimes runs, maybe when you need it, if you are lucky.) The only problem will be ground transportation while there. Perhaps someone has an empty seat? I've been known to do back seats in GT4s, also the trunks are do-able. However, I'm kinda large, so handling may be adversely affected.

Anyway, I should know soon.

Hans, it only makes a difference if the lightning rod is up and connected to the flux capacitor...

I'll be down on the 15th and 16th to attend the Pat Hart garage tour. You going?

Hans, Yes it does make a difference. You have to be in reverse.

Does it make any difference if I go 88mph, and drive right toward the town square clock?

Hans, No you can't turn back the hands of time, but you can turn back the hands on your Ferrari clock.

Good chuckle there, Peter. BTW, I *might* be able to make Seattle on the 14th. Dave warned me that you might show up.

Hans, turn it back, it won't hurt it.

The clock is the only gauge I trust and believe on that dashboard... The rest are mearly suggestions/estimations.

Mine keeps perfect time also. So does the little clock in my 1980 VW Scirocco. I never have to touch them except when the battery has been out or for daylight savings time.
My VCR needs adjusting every month.

Hans,

The Veglia clock in my 1976 308 GTB keeps perfect time too. It had stayed precise to the second as I set it when Daylight Savings Time took effect seven months ago.

Actually, Hans's question is not without merit. Fine watches, Patek, Vacheron, etc., are best turned clockwise. The complex gearing and bearings (jewels) have torque applied by the spring in one direction, and counterclockwise rotation is ill-advised. However, having just rebuilt my 3rd 70s vintage Ferrari clock, I can report that these are the furthest from "fine" as you can imagine. The gears are nylon, large, and without subtlety. I turn mine backwards WITH IMPUNITY. If it turns you on, turn it backwards. No harm done.

Magoo: The clock looks a little foggy today. Should clear up as the day goes on.

What's amazing about this antique clock is that it keeps perfect time.

I can't turn my backwards either. The 355 is adjusted by pushing the adjustment lever in, and it causes the time to move forward rapidly. I couldn't make it go backwards, but this works ok.

I turn the clock back on my '89 328 all the time. It doesn't seem to bother the clock at all.

I'd be surprised if it would harm the clock on a '75 308 GT4.

I keep my clocks unhooked in all my Fcars. Battery drain you know.

Spending too much time with the car? Maybe that explains why I kissed the car goodnight and honked the girlfriend's horn.

Talk to a clock maker/repair person. They'll tell you it doesn't matter.

Hans, don't know if you got the answer you were looking for....but I just changed mine this weekend and I advanced it forward 11 hours. I don't think it's a good idea to turn mechanical clocks backwards.

Hans, you're spending way too much time with that car. Go to bed, kiss your wife or girlfriend good night and use the alarm clock on your nightstand. If you continue to experience problems, seek professional advice.

Hans, I don't believe you are asking this question. Turn the clock forward, backward, sideways, whatever, there is no problem and no alarm. Regards,

This question borders on stupid, but hey, it's late and the post-Monday night football beer is soaking in.

I haven't reset my '75 308GT4 clock back to Standard Time yet. On most mechanical clocks, you aren't supposed to turn the hands backward. However, most such clocks have an alarm, and I can see how turning backward could screw up the alarm triggering mechanism.

Is it safe to turn a Ferrari clock backward? OK, I shouldn't be so lazy. Just disconnect the battery and/or fuse for 1 hour, or advance the clock forward 11 hours. But there are other times as well that this might be handy to know.
