Thanks to all for their input. I cleaned/tightened battery posts and cleaned the battery disconnect which was quite dirty. So far, so good. 7 consecutive starts. It's a low mileage car so I would not think the starter is gone, but it was not driven much the previous 5 years before I got it.

Me and my fat fingers. It has now happened 2 more times, this thread has jinxed me. With mine, I turn the key twice, nothing, the third time it starts. Crap. I guess I'll clean the battery terminals first since I know my ignition switch is only 6 mos old. I hope it's not the starter, not sure how I'll explain THAT to my wife after I just got it back from it's 30k. The last service stop wasn't cheap, and it's only been a month. |

My car had an ignition switch problem before I bought it, the replacement was a BMW part, and not that expensive. Today for the first time, I had the "turn the key, nothing happens" problem. I hope it doesn't happen again. |

I have an 87 3.2 Mondial, same problem. I rebuilt the starter motor, still stuffed. I eventually worked out it was the ignition switch, now every 6 mths or so I remove the ig switch and spray contact cleaner into it, works perfectly after that! New ig switches are near impossible to source as I understand it, about US$1000 if you can find them! PC

Sam - where would one take an ignition key switch for a rebuild? |

my expereience is exactly the same as Ric's , 308/QV/348. clean all contacts and grounds , don't forget the ignition key switch as well. usually works, on rebuild, they will look at you real weird and want to know the car it came from so they can look it up for a replacement. Just tell them it is a fiat and that you don't know anything else and could they just rebuild yours....don't be surprised if it still has that problem w/ new starter ifyou didn't clean all connections well. |

Had this problem with my 3.2 Mondial. Had the starter rebuilt with new solenoid. Problem solved. Wasn't too expensive. Don't get a new starter and when you get it rebuilt, don't tell them it's from a Ferrari. |

I've had this problem on more than one Ferrari (3 different ones actually) and here's what I did to fix it: Once, I simple needed to clean the battery terminals. Even though the car would crank strongly and run fine, once out of about every three times I tried to start it... nothing. Not even a "click" of the solenoid. Turned out that the battery terminals needed cleaning. On two different cars, it turned out that a starter motor rebuild fixed the problem. The solenoid would project, but the starter wouldn't turn. The good news is, even if you have to have the starter rebuilt, it's a relatively easy job and relatively inexpensive ($100-ish) to get the starter rebuild (standard Bosch part #). |

Sometimes when I turn the key to start my 328, which I have owned just briefly, nothing happens. The dashlights don't dim, so I know there is no current draw. It always works on the first retry. Battery spins the motor fast when it does work. Any tips to begin troubleshooting? Thanks, Dave |
