Mitchell, I like your action plan. I was unsuccessful in getting the XR700 pickups to work on a distributor machine, to set the advance curve. I was successful in setting the advance curve on my Elan distributor with points installed and then later installed the XR700. system. |

Bill The cams are older type without any oil plugs, just o-rings. So there is a lot of oil leaking into the distributors, especially the 4-8 one. The oil plugs should help, but it is a bear to do. No, I have not installed the XR700, and probably will wait until after the engine fires up before I do that change. But, I will do that change, it is highly recommended, and you know I bought the stuff. |

Mitchell, It looks like you're really into it now. What is the reason for installation of the two oil plugs in the cam? When you have the crank magnafluxed, it might be a good time to also magnaflux the connecting rods and bolts. Cheap insurance. Have you installed the XR700 pickups in the distributor yet or are you going to wait until after you fire it up the first time?

Photos would be welcome. I am a couple of weeks behind you -- engine is out, appendages cleaned & rebuilt, figured out my ignition problem (how to replace digiplexes -- the answer is to replace the cams and go to a single distributor with two XR700s). I'll be stripping the main block this weekend. Because I'm in Canada and my garage is unheated, the engine compartment waits another month or so. Looking forward to yr progress..... |

I am at the mid-point of the project where I stop taking things off and start putting them back on so I guess I will give a status update. What I have done: 1. Removed and tored the engine down to all bits and pieces. 2. Changed all fuel hoses, all water hoses, all vaccuum hoses including the 14 feet ones. 3. Removed the rear suspension, cleaned and painted the components ready for the bushing replacement (as soon as I get them) 4. Blasted the wheels and ready for painting them. 5. Cam shafts are all cleaned, including one that was scored a little. Thanks Elgin Cam! 6. Heads are disassembled, waiting for the bearing journal (1 of 20) to be welded, rehoned, before I put the whole thing back with new exhaust valves, new guides, and new seals. 7. The block is waiting for a machine shop to repair the two saddles (minor scratch) and re-line bored for trueness. 8. The crank-shaft needs to be cleaned, magnafluxed and any damages repaired. Amandor in Redwood city is quoting $700 for the crank work, but I think he is just selling me a job I don't need. So, I am going to my trusted machine shop in Santa Clara. 9. All four carburetors are rebuilt and just waiting for the car 10. Fuel tanks are cleaned and repainted. I need to bring the cams to an Italian car shop and have them install the two oil plugs, and check out the advance mechanism on the two distributors I already rebuilt. The frame is cleaned and painted again black. The rust spots on the body panels in the engine compartment have been brushed and painted over with Wurth rust sealant. I still need to replace one firewall due to rust. Then, engine reassebly work next month when all machine work is done. Change to electronic ignition, put the engine back in, and fire her up. That will take 2 more months. So far, it has been very enjoyable. Sorry no pictures, but I can take some if anyone is interested. |
