Its the seal Darrell. Over time, the coolant eventually seeps past the two-piece seal (one piece carbon/graphite, the other porcelain/ceramic). This is why the pumps have drain holes. As long as its leaking out of the first hole (the one closest to the engine), you should have no problems. If its leaking out of the second hole (midway down the body/neck of the pump), then it will probably break down in the near future, as the bearings are now getting washed with hot coolant... |

Here I go commenting on 308's again so take perhaps with a grain of salt. But......on my 328, I have had the short section of 1.5 inch hose that attaches the aluminum tube section to the water pump loosen and leak, particularly in cold weather. The old hose hardened over the years and would leak occasionally. Ditto for the two sections on the back of the pump. The aluminum tube passes by the passenger side gas tank. At that point in time, my water pump was not leaking; it was the hoses where they attached to the pump. It was an intermittent leak. |

Today I went out to start my 1984 308GTSi after it has been sitting in a cold garage for about 3 weeks. (Considerably warmer today) Prior to starting the car I did a walk around and checked fluids etc, and noticed there was coolant dripping from underneath the car. Very near where the water pump is located. Not much, but enough to notice. I checked the coolant level - OK. Started the car and it warmed up ok and settled into a nice idle. After shutting it off the dripping ceased. I checked a couple of hours later, still no dripping. So is this a seal or clamp problem related to the weather change or should I look somewhere else before I start making adjustments? Any suggestions as usual will be gratefully received. |
