Remove the lower body-colored valance at the rear of the car to get the system out in one-piece. Remove the flange connection bolts rather than cutting them. I believe I used standard small-block Chevy exhaust "donuts" at the connections to the headers.

Before I go down to the garage to look in depth at mine (I removed the entire exhaust - precats, cats, and muffler). I'd venture to say that you can't remove any of it from the top, altho I'm not %100 certain of that. I'd think you couldn't shift the muffler enough with the frame rail (that the black cover sits on) there, to wedge the tips out from their normal positions.

Once someone can confirm that it cannot be done from the top I can go over the instructions for removing it from the bottom.

I don't recommend cutting any of the bolts (that to me is a last resort), the ones from my headers we managed to get undone by hand and resused (after gooping them appropriately).

PS. My stock system will go back in before labor day for a few weeks, mainly do to smog testing, as well I will probably enter my TR again for judging at Concorso Italiano (I could have used those 2 points last year).

My new Koenig muffler is due in next week and I need help in the removal process of the old. It looks like the black metal cover attached to the air intake that sits above the muffler comes off, then the two bolts at each cat have to be removed ( I assume cut off ) and then the hanging bolts need to be removed and the unit is pulled out from the top. In addition, will I need new gaskets between the muffler and cats or are these reusable. If I need new ones, are they standard sizes, same with the bolts. Will NAPA or such carry them.
Thanks
