Jim, had the exact same problem when I bought my 85 308QV. Had all 4 wheels rebalanced, and the problem completely disappeared. Not even a trace of vibration at any speeds since. That was 6 months ago and the problem has never resurfaced. I'd check the balance first before jumping to more costly and complicated conclusions.

I had the same thing happen w my '85 QV after having the tires balanced. Brought it back to be done right a second time and the problem stopped. I've had this same experience before with other cars--wherein the balancing was not done carefully. Everytime I 've brought tem back to be redone, it's been done right the second time.

Whenever I have an issue with tire balance, I put the car on jack stands and put the front tires on the rear of the car. Then run the wheels at the speed and see if the tire is spinning or spinning and shaking. Have both rears off the ground unless you have an open rear end.

While I'm at it, if you do this to a car with open differential and leave one wheel on the ground, the speedo will read one half the correct value. So 30 mph is 60 and so forth.

Jim,

I have the same car - and the same problem. It was really bad after a tire & wheel change, but a re-balance helped a lot. Still a bit of a vibe at around 60, but tolerable. Funny though, it's not nearly as smooth as it was when I was running on the original 390mm wheels & tires.

I haven't heard of a steering rack problem common with the car, so I would tend to believe it's more tire related than anything else.

What kind and size tire do you have? And when were they installed or last balanced?

Sounds like the 308 steering rack problem.

I have a 1985 308 QV - Euro spec. Lately I've noticed vibration in the steering wheel around 65 mph - not up to 65 nor after 65 - say 80+ no vibration -rock solid! I do notice some vibration when turning and more pressure is on the suspension. Does this sound like a suspension problem or wheel balance problem to you guys??
