And the shaft below the lower u-joint passes thru a plain bearing mounted in the floor -- wouldn't hurt to relubricate every 1/4 century |

Something else you might consider is checking the universal joints in the steering shaft. |

Thanks, Ed. So, this is something not easily corrected, is seems then. I guess I'll have to live with it, or replace the rack? --Mike |

You probably have a worn area on the pinion in the unit. These usually wear greater in the straight ahead position and then when turned it hits the unworn high spots. Usually rebuilding does not correct this as they generally only replace bushings and seals. |

I've got an issue in my 78 308 that I haven't noticed in other 308s I've been in. When at a standstill, or very slow speed, turning the wheel feels VERY unsteady. It goes from being very easy to turn, to very hard to turn--then easy, then hard, etc. throughout the entire range. Essentially, the resistance changes as you turn the wheel. Is this normal? The rack had been replaced back in 89. It's frustrating when trying to park--don't mind not having power steering, but would prefer it to be "consistently" non-assisted steering ;). If any 308 owners have seen this, I'd be very appreciative to hear about it. My mechanic says it's a normal condition. Thanks, --Mike
