Thanks for all the information. I have been thinking, and was wondering this. My fuse box has been giving me problems, and I have had points in my 66 Mustang get burned and have that type of popping. Could the fuse box, giving a bad connection cause the points to be burned out?
Thanks for the help.

Charles, I like to use 2 timing lights. I use different colors on the timing marks for the 2 banks. (I tape the timing lights together just so I can keep a grip on em.) The synchronization (or lack there of) throughout the rpm range is clearly revealed.

Charles I have a 77 GTB also and the timing is straight forward. If you have the owners manual it goes through the whole process. If you look under the oil filter and on the bell housing you will see a little plate with 2 nuts holding it on. Pull that off and you will see the flywheel. If you turn the motor by hand (ratchet on crank nut , Clockwise looking at front crankshaft) you will see the timing marks for 1-4 (rear dist.)and 5-8 (front dist. or firewall side).Follow the book from there. Also before you do that the popping may be from a carb. or sparkplug wire or bad points. I'd look at that before adjusting the timing.Sometime a carb. leans out and pops. Let us know how you make out. Steve

I got such wonderful help the last time I put something up on the BB, I thought that I would ask, or rather beg for some more. My 308 has started getting a few small backfires from the left exhaust pipe. At first I thought that I had a fouled spark plug, but not I believe that the timing is off just a little. I have timed many vehicles before, but never one with two distributors. If anyone would be so kind as to give me a few pointers I would appreciate it greatly.
Charles
