Yes,

I did my own total rebuild, and it is always a good practice to do a major tune up 1000 miles after the fresh rebuild. Finding those 4 loose head nuts is reason enough, plus the two too-tight valves.

I guess I could confirm the carbon theory by a compression test.

Mitch, there may be a small chunk of carbon build-up holding the exhaust valves open - to give you that 0.005" loose measurement. It could be confirmed if those valves are for the cylinders that are running rich.

I found "crud" in my oil, even after 500mi from my service. All it was were bits of the Permatex that had oozed-out from some of the flanges (and I was really careful to NOT put too much on...).

Mitchell - did you do your own rebuild? What led you to do a "tune up" after 1000 miles?

I got 1000 miles now after the engine rebuild, this weekend I decided to do a major tune up. What I foud are:

a. 2 intake valves too tight and 2 exhaust valves too loose. I can understand what would cause the valves to be tight (valves beating up against valve seats), but what would cause them to be 0.005" too tight?

b. The 5-8 valve cover did not gracefully come off (2 studs were slightly bent) so I had to remove the time belt cover to get enough space to pry it off. So, the AC compressor had to come off, and the coolant return pipe had to come off, and what a mess the coolant made.

c. Four head nuts needed another 90 degrees or so to get to 72 lbs-ft of torque.

d. Half the plugs are brown (NGK PB6ES) and half are black. I guess the idle is still a litte lean on those.

e. Did find plenty of crud in the engine oil. Glad I am changing that oil and get some fresh stuff in.

It took me 8 hours to get to this point. I need to buy one more slightly thicker valve shims (got plenty of thinner ones) before I can button up everything.
