You're doing a TR, so I have NO IDEA how this compares. However, when dumping copious amounts of water or other stuff in my engine bay, I am carefull of the alternator, as it is in a rather stupid, vulnerable spot down low. I will soon be doing a cleaning job on the front of my engine. I'll wrap the alternator in Saran wrap. (Hmmm..... a lady told me about a Saran wrap incident in the old book "The Total Woman". I'll probably lose sleep tonight.) |

I am a do-it-yourselfer for just about everything however when it comes to engine washing I leave it to a detail shop to do. They do it all the time and clean in a way that all the hours of scrubbbing I have done could not compare to (I was STUNNED with the job I recently had done on a second hand BMW I bought). Also, if any electrics fry when they do it, then they are liable. Once the engine is good and clean, you can get in there and detail those little bits that may need a manual buffing or re-painting. Good luck with the project. |

Whatever you do, try to avoid dumping water into the electrical boxes (ECUs) under the fenders on both side. Also avoid water, and any other chemical, from running into the Timing Belts area in the front of the engine. |

I would like to start detailing the engine bay of the TR. Is it safe to CAREFULLY wash down the enging bay? I would cover all electrical components, and use something like Simple Green or other cleaner, and a paint brush to get into tight spots. Is it bad to get water around the fuel distributors or the top of the crankcase? It would take a lifetime to do it just with rags soaked with cleaner. Any suggestions? |
