Update Removed the old belt which looked glazed from the belt dressing, the alternator bolts are a major PIA to get as well as retightening the alternator belt finding a way to get tension on the belt I finally just reached my arm under tha frame and pulled the alternator down with my hand and retightened the bolts The book says 4mm deflection in w/p belt which seems pretty tight, restarted engine and noises stopped |

Jeff, Change the belt and adjust. M PS dont use conditioner. It could spin off and hit your timing belts. My 2 cents. a $3.00 belt is better then a $900 belt job. |

Thanks for the replies The PO just had the pump/belt replaced 600 miles ago, so it seems puzzling why the belt would be bad so soon |

And before you tighten the new belt, make sure everything on that belt is turning freely and not binding (like a waterpump bearing going bad...) |

Put on a new one, but on my car atleast, even with a new belt, it needs to be tightened to what seems an unreasonable tension. The belt is just too small really. |

If you keep tightening the belt you are going to prematurely wear the bearings out on the water pump. Get a new belt. |

Start carrying a spare belt with you... They're not too expensive, if it's being a pain you might as well just swap it for a new one. |

My water pump belt on my 86 328 is making a squealing noise, I recently tightened the belt and it stopped squealing for about 15 miles and started up again When I put belt conditioner (I know this stuff is bad) on the belt it(the squealing) will go away until the next time vehicle is run and I'll start over again The belt is pretty tight now, any ideas? Thanks in advance |
