I guess Asbestos can be compared to Cigarette smoking, A silent killer. It won't kill you until it does. |

When it comes to asbestos, the dust you can see hanging in the air can't penetrate your lungs deep enough to cause lung damage. (But when you swallow it, it can cause intestinal cancer.) It is the very small asbestos particles, you can't see, that get deep into your lungs that will cause leasons, tumors,,,, and eventually kill you. |

If it doesn't kill you, inhaling asbestos just makes you stronger. As long as you guys aren't licking your brakes and clutches you'll be fine. I always blow the brakes out if I'm gonna do anything with them, I just do it outside and don't inhale all the dust. |

Vince,Glad you found it out here. Which sends out a word of caution to all you DIYs, brakes and clutches still have asbestos in them. Use the precautions that we have spelled out for you in this post. |

Scare the sh** out of me... Come to find out Edward & Magoo are ABSOLUTELY right. Check out; http://www.lni.wa.gov/sharp/asbestos_brakes.pdf No more compressed air! From now on, its hot soapy water from a bug sprayer, dripping onto paper towels at the bottom of a can with a trash bag liner. Followed with Brakekleen to drive out the water & soap. Thanks guys! Rgds, Vince

Oh yeah another important thing. Get a Niosh approved mask to block asbestos fibers. I think they can be purchased at Home Depot. |

Ed you are correct. I have seen "ASBESTOS" recently stamped on boxes that brake pads come in. That's why brake kleen should be used to wet down the asbestos fibers and keep them from getting airborne. DON'T use a air hose to clean off a brake rotor, backing plate or brake drum. The EPA is always talking about eliminating asbestos and yet they still allow it to be used in brake pads and clutch discs. Think about it, how many vehicles are on the street and in the city the friction of pad to rotor and lining to drum stop and start and particles becoming airborne. Something is wrong with this picture. I still take all precautions when working on brakes to make sure all dust is wetted down with brake kleen and care is taken on removing the wheel to get to the brakes. Brake dust is everywhere even on the outside of your wheel. True as Ed says asbestos is still alive. Just take all precautions. |

Asbeston is still being produced and used in automotive brakes and clutches. Technicians are expendable. |

If you suspect it - test it. The 25$ fee may save your life. Asbestos was outlawed in the 70's (unverified recollection)in most products (brakes, clutches etc). Unlikely it is in your '87. These rod shaped fibers, once inhaled will remain in your lungs for life. They are so small that they pierce the cells in your lungs and constantly move - piercing each cell as they are squeezed along through your natural breathing movements. Your lungs may develop scar tissue as a result -or perhaps- cancer. BTW - a simple dust mask is insufficient... get a NIOSH approved mask for asbestos and use lots of water to keep any fibers out of the air. Thake care, Vince |

If it is asbestos and you are a lab rat and you consume 4 billion times your own weight of it you may get cancer. I have been breathing the stuff for 35 years and I turned out alright. |

Mitchell, That's a good question. I know what you are referring to. And yes it does look like asbestos. Also could be being that era. Look in the yellow pages. I'm sure there is some Co. that does hazardous waste clean up and take them a sample. I'll bet that's what it is. |

I am removing (cutting out) the rear engine firewall to replace it due to rust. I see some heat resistant material behind the panel. Presumably it is insulating the trunk from the engine heat. Is this stuff asbestos? It does not ignite from the spark by the cutter. Is there a test? |
