Caribe -- I took the (1:1) drawing (so the guy could use it as a template) and the wrench to a muffler shop who did the heating/bending -- paid $15. |

Steve, got the wrench. How did you bend it? Did you have to use heat? It is quite heavy and strong, it will take a lot to bend. Thanks, Caribe. |

Arnaldo -- in my TR SPC (587/90) the speedo sending unit 116987 appears on Tav. 32 GEAR BOX. It mounts at an angle from below into the small oil pump casting that mounts onto the front of the main gear box casting. |

Nope, on my GT4 it shows 10mph (RPM as well at around 500). |

Mine also starts at 10 mph. I think this is by design, but yes, if anybody has a different experience please let us know. |

Actually Adam, thats the way it was when I bought the car. I would assume that any speedo would start at zero, but I could be wrong. Think I'll call the local police dept. as well, to see where they've put their radar unit. |

Funny you should say that Bill. I just noticed the other night on my 86 TR that the Speedo started at 10MPH. I thought it was a design thing since I did not see a stop pin at Zero for the needle. Was it ever at Zero vs. 10MPH? I have been looking for those Radar units that the local police use to warn you of your speed to see if the speedo is off or not. |

Steve, you have got to have experience in drafting/mechanical drawing. That is one fine 'sketch' - thanks for the tech. info. My speedo's (86 TR)problem is slighly different. It starts at 10 mph, not at zero. Does anyone know if these units can be recalibrated? |

Well, before proceeding with the task of replacing the Sending Unit I decided to obtain copies of the Workshop and Parts manuals from Nick (Thanks Nick!). I have been looking all over these books and I am yet to find any information regarding the location and use of this unit. Would somebody be so kind as to let me know where is the Sending Unit referred to on the both these books? Also, Does anybody have a picture of what this thing is suppose to look like? Thanks, Arnaldo. |

Gentlemen, Thanks so much for your replies. Mark, Thanks for the information. I will procure the part and tools to hopefully take care of this issue. I will let you guys know what happened. Caribe. |

Caribe -- my TR speedometer/odometer would occasionally stop working and replacing the sender (116987) solved the problem (but no guarantee OK? -- I'd love to see the FNA or T.Rutlands records to see if this is a commonly replaced part). Unfortunately, with the engine in the car you'll need: 1) an offset 32mm box-end wrench (with a huge offset) and 2) to remove the oil filter in order to do the removal/installation. I fabricated my own offset 32mm box-end wrench from a (straight) Sears Craftsman 1 1/4-1 1/16 box-end wrench per this sketch:
A larger, higher quality jpeg is at: http://albums.photopoint.com/j/View?u=972829&a=10846708&p=51791802 for anyone interested -- but even this jpeg is reduced from the original 1:1 size so I added some marks on the drawing 6 (152.4 mm) apart so it can be rescaled properly. |

More often than not, it tends to be the speedo sending unit. It's a relatively easy fix which I did on my 308....not sure about the TR. |

Weird, I had the exact same thing happen for the first time to me this weekend in my QV -- But on my ride iot was all the center mounted guages at once -- I suspected a faulty fuse or wire myself but since I am used to Jaguars and Maseratis, I was more surprised teh guages came back on than I was when they cut out...by the way, mine was not related to any bump in teh road or anything else, seemed to be coincidental with the electric door locks not working as well, did not start trouble shooting though...probably wait for a total failure. |

My TR (1990) started to not show any activity on the speedometer recently. It works fine for a while, then suddenly, it goes off (mileage does not move and speed indicator goes down to the bottom). I believe it might be an electrical issue, since it goes on/off randomly but it is on most of the time. Does anybody have any ideas where to start looking? Thanks, Caribe. |
