BTW, here's a gov't evaluation of sodium silicate to fix a leaking nuclear reactor vessel: Evaluation of Cargo Leak Seal Product for Use in Tank 30 Cooling http://www.srs.gov/general/pubs/fulltext/tr2001162/tr2001162.html BTW, I just remembered something: DO NOT MIX Sodium Silicate with antifreeze. The combination gels & will clog your entire cooling system!!! Hi-Gear makes one of the cooling system sealants. Here's what they say about the what can go wrong if you mix them: http://www.hi-gear-usa.com/eng/faq.htm Still, if used right Sodium Silicate should do the job if BARs leaks doesn't... |

I know this will sound stupid but here goes: An old mechanic's trick is put an egg in the cooling system. It works, believe me. If you are looking for a patch then its a halfass repair anyway no matter what you use. I put an egg in a mustang rad one day to make it home, bad leak from the water pump. That was two years ago and it still holds. I havent bothered fixing it yet. |

If it's just leaking coolant(oozing it, not spraying it when the cooling system is heated up) there are 2 old stand-bys you could add to the coolant to try to seal things: 1)BARs Leaks Fixes minor leaks & lubes your water pump. Brown ~6oz bottle at most parts stores. I've had it take care of small radiator leaks, weeping gaskets, etc. Just remember to stir it up really well before pouring it in. It helps to have the coolant heated up & flowing as well (RTFL - Read the F'n lable).. I've even gotten a year out of a water pump after I noticed the seal weeping & used the stuff. 2) Sodimu Silicate (aka: waterglass) - a silica solution that hardens under heat & evaporation. I've actually seen a car run for a couple of years after this stuff sealed a hairline crack in it's block! I can't remember the common brand name. Any old-time parts man should be able to come up with some tho. Hmm, here's a web page on 'Fixing Head Gasket Leaks and Small Cracks': http://www.allpar.com/fix/cracks.html Probably lots more out there, just search for 'sodium silicate' and 'leaks'... |

I remember this thread, but there was no mention of what the substance was: http://server.ferrarichat.com/~ferrari/ferrarichat.com/discus/messages/112/146007.html |

a little while back someone mentioned a problem with a headgasket that was leaking on the outside and some kind of spray on remedy/temporary fix...anyone know what this product is or another that could fix a slightly leaky headgasket (not my ferrari but a beater Audi that I don't want to dump money into) |
