After your car turns 20 years old in NY - It does not need an emission test. 1982 and back can have whatever you want, as long as the mechanic himself does not REMOVE the emisssion control equipment.

PS, Stu, if you would have played golf on a day like today, you can truly pick the name balataboy. Quite wet out there as they say...

Hi Stu and Dave,

I passed with the Tubi added although I was told that my car "idled high" and would have to be running lower when it came through for inspection again. Graham at Park Place does my work...

Stu,
I am using Carlo Durante at Alfa of Tacoma. He has done great work, treated me well, and I consider him a friend, as well. The only tough part is getting scheduled in, he is always back logged by several weeks. Things may get better, as rumor is that he has hired a new mechanic to assist him.

Graham at Park Place is well regarded too, but I feel no reason to switch...

Hey Dave,

No cats! Haven't gone through an inspection yet as I'm running on a dealer plate. I doubt it would pass, but mechanic says he can get it to pass with a little "tweeking".

BTW - who are you using for mechanical work on the new car? I use Park Place and so far I've been pretty satisfied.

Wasn't there a fellow a while back that made his own exhuast out of a flowmaster muffler for this 308? I was just wondering how that would sound.

Oh and this applies to FI cars, don't even bother trying to get a carb car to pass w/o the cats...though you might not need the air pump...I know of several carb 308's that passed with cats and no air pump...but surprisingly, I know of a friend with a 308GTSi that had a cat, but no airpump and would not pass. He installed the air pump, and he passed.

Stephen,
Yes, in WA state emission tests are required every other year until the vehicle is 25 yrs old. There are exemptions in certain, less populated counties though....

I am not an expert here, but my understanding is that if you CO is adjusted correctly to spec., and the car is fully warmed up, it will pass. The cat is basically doing it's job during warm-up and if there is an ignition problem...

Kelly, The Tubi was $2075 and the test pipes were $249.

Stephen,
I just had new cats put on last December to get the car to pass smog. I have to get it done again in December of 2004 here in California. I assumed that I would need to put on the cats, original muffler and smog pump. However, after hearing Davids comments and some others I think I may try to get it through with as is, if not I'll just bolt the old stuff on for the test I guess.

David:
Are state smog tests required in WA ? Do you have a cut off year? I'm thinking of cats w/ a Tubi for my QV, but am hesitant about the test pipes. If it seems concievable that a Tubi/Cat equipted car can be tuned to pass, I'll probably go for it in the new year.

I know of a local Ferrari owner who has gotten his 92 512TR, 94 348 and 89 328 to pass with tubi and test pipes...it can be done.

Brent:
Any idea if you could pass a smog with the test pipe in place? For that matter, do you think the cats and Tubi would pass? Not too concerned on the visual, but would need to figure in exhaust swaps every other year into the purchase equation.

Good for you, Brent! It's fun to add new goodies. I did the same but, as I have stated before, I find the Tubi a bit too loud for my tastes and I didn't really notice all that much of a difference in acceleration. Oh well, no regrets! You might try Nick's ignition system as well, it's a nice compliment to the Tubi. Good luck - Stu

Well folks the best thing I have ever done was to put Nick's test pipes and a Tubi Exhaust on my 308. Boy it sounds just like an F1 car from the 1980's. Definitely revs quicker and seems to accelerate faster. The sound is just amazing!!! Got it from Tino at MENSI he was very helpful and I got it in less than a week.
