I have the same thing too on my GT4, just a fitting and a 6-inch long hose attached to it (although not bent in a U, but points up at an angle, same idea).

Gene, you are correct. He removed the breather check valve, and connected it directly to the pipe.

Neil, did he remove and "retire" the breather completely and attach the hose directly to the pipe or attach the hose to the end of the breather? It seems it would not drain back if attached to the end of the breather because of the check valve in the breather. Thanks for the tip.

Hey, what a simple but effective trick ! I'll try that, thanks ! :-) Nev

Neville, on my 77 308GTB (USA model), I had a leaking problem there also. Mentioned it to the Ferrari mechanic at Wide World of Cars in NYC. He corrected the problem by installing a clear tube to the breather, and looped it it the shape of an upside down "U". Any fluid that came out, would rise up in the tube, but not far enough to come all the way out, then would recede back into the case after running. Thought it was a pretty clever fix. Obviously he had seen the problem many times.

Hiya ! On my '80 308GTS carb euro I've got one annoying leak from the following location ..... on the bell housing, slightly towards the rear of the car, just up from the transfer gear box assembly is a small (what looks like) breather pipe of some kind, about 4 or 5 inches tall, less than 1cm in diameter, with a loose fitting little "cap" on the top, which appears to be sprung loaded.

If I take my car out for a little bit of "spirited" driving, this breather thingie leaks oil ... all down the side of the transfer box. Quite a lot, actually. What IS this breather ? Is it from the engine or the transfer box ? I'm worried that if it's the transfer box, I'm going to get dangerously low on oil in there.

How do I stop it leaking ? Why is it leaking ? Is it a case of R&R, and if so can you still get these weird thingamajigs, does anyone know ?

I took it off to inspect it (it just taps out, friction fit), and it's just a metal pipe with a sprung loaded little cap on the top holding down a little rubber disk (as a seal), which visually appears fine ..... okay, the tiny spring might be weak and opening up a bit early (which cannot be ascertained just by looking), but judging by the amount of oil coming out, even if the spring was a touch stronger, it wouldn't make much difference .... ?

Thanks for any help from the brains on the list :-) ! Nev
