You have to keep standing on the gas to appreciate the 4V engine over the 2V. O-100 is 4 sec quicker in the 4V.
Some of the 81's had the oil temp and clock on top of each other. I have never seen an 82 that wasn't side by side; a much better appearence imo.

Even though they look alike, there are major internal differences between the two and four valve engines. To also be honest, I have driven both and I could not feel any real difference in power. The two valve engine is better than the Press it gets.

Thats right, were all 308s quatros in '83? I know that is a different engine compared to the 2 valved engine.

QValves did not come out until 1983.

The 1980 models had them on top of each other on the console.

Is your Ferrari a QV?

My 82 308 has the clock and oil temp gauge side by side on the console and it is supposed to be that way because the man I bought it from on EBAY wouldn't lie.

Bret- The gauges are the ones in the center console near the shifter gate, not the dash area. Transmission temp and the clock. I read reciently that those gauges should be mounted one on top of the other in non-QVs. Mark

Yeah that's what it sounds like. He probably got tired of burying the needle everytime he broke 80.

Mark, I would say someone tried to update your car.

My '82 gtsi has the rear spoiler and it's not a QV. Was this put on by the factory, the dealer or the owner? It doesn't matter to me though. I also have a QV instrument cluster on my center console. Every hand built Ferrari was truely unique in it's own way. I have seen other 308s and no two are alike.

I make a contorted reaching effort that should definitely qualify me for some sort of Olympic event.

Herb is right, the spoiler blocks the gap to get to the front bank of plugs, as well as the dipstick. How DO people get to those with the spoiler?

Back when they first did it, I thought it was a sunshade... You know, to keep the back of your head cool. Hey, I was young.

I for one like how it looks.
Also, like Herbert said it makes services harder, which means more $ for Ferrari. And you thought there was no reason for it. I'm telling you, Ferrari is the biggest tycoon.

Lens and Herb are dead on.. "the basket handle" it was a Ferrari North America marketing item so they could help sell QV's and they would look different from the 2v cars. it is the definition of tacky...it is just tacked on and certainly does not make the car go faster...and I think was an option on euro cars...I can't imagine it has any function until I heard Herb's very plausible Ferrariesque explanation. 2v cars look so much cleaner without this thing and without center hood mounted vents as well. myhmo!

p.s. just saw a 308 GTS with a bike rack mounted on the targa top carrying two bikes...wish I had my camera..308 was white and sited in teh Hamptons --creative!

It was put there so kids with Ricers will like the cars too!

I think it was actually requested of the factory by North American dealers to enhance the cars aesthetics.

It was put there to make engine service even harder. It bridges the only gap left available to access the engine with the lid up. I wouldn't have one on mine if you gave it to me.

I believe it was added to increase the suction of air up thru the engine compartment to aid in the cooling of the engine

What is the function of the rear spoiler on a 308? You know, the one that bridges over the rear deck lid.

1. Asethetics?
2. Down force?
3. Aerodynamic?
4. Air flow manipulation (to reduce drag)?

Anyone knows?
