I will try that as soon as I drive the car again. I will revive the post with the results. Thanks again. |

David, I don't know but it seems like you do have the shift lever scrubbing on the plate. To be sure, take a thin piece of plastic or vinyl and slide it down between where the lever touches the plate. Drive it and see if it still chirps. But like Ric says and I feel also that something is out of adjustment or bushings worn etc. allowing to much travel in the lever. |

Magoo and John, Both of your descriptions are accurate. Magoo, Yes - if I put slight pressure on the stick moving it slightly to the left the noise stops. That is why I do not think it is further down. Like John describes - the stick is just a little out of center of each gate I guess. It is definitely just the stick touching the side of the gate but NO resulting damage to the stick or the gate. Just a slight high pitched squeak that is irritating to my ear. Any suggestions - Thanks |

Check the chrome plating on the shift lever, where it contacts the gate, and the inside surfaces in the gate slots. Could be rubbing and or a plating issue I am experiencing. My 348 spider exhibited odd shifting action/noise. The lever centered in the gate perfectly. Turned out the chrome had failed on either the shift lever or the gate, resulting in soft steel abrading against the "as cast" inside slot surfaces in the gate. I believe the problem results from the tension centering the lever due to the cable linkage system. If I move my shift lever right or left and release, it will imediately center itself. I am assuming this is normal for 348's. Feedback appreciated. My TR and 308 employed a transmission rod and had no side to side tension, if I recall correctly. |

David, Are you sure it is the shifter plate rubbing the stick or something further down on the shifter linkage. I would check because putting pressure on the stick could cause the problem to go away. |

I just took a look. Mine has a rubber boot below the shift gate and a square nut between the rubber boot and the bottom edge of the gate plate. The rubber boot keeps trash from getting to far down but no sign of any cell foam. My car was near the end of the 348 production, maybe they changed this. I must add that the mechanics of the shifter are great. Smooth passage and I can even use 2nd gear when it is cold. Any ideas ?? |

With the shifter perfetcly adjusted, this shouldn't happen. However, there are at least two rubber bushings in the linkage that are subject to weak, so you may have to get those checked as well. My 348 has (since new, I think) a piece of medium-cell foam stuffed down in the shifter assembly. This keeps junk out and may also reduce rattles. It doesn't affect the shifting. Does yours have this foam? |

Just purcased the 348 Spyder 2 weeks ago - Ice and Snow melted and now I can go for a drive. Noticed during the PPI and since getting home a "rattle or squeak" while driving. I have pin pointed it to the shift post slightly touching the side of the shift gate. If I keep some pressure on it ( a little pressure to the side ) while driving it stops. Is there an easy adjustment or some lubricant I can apply to stop the noise? It is not that loud but it sure does annoy me. I guess I have hearing like a dog, high pitches drive me nuts. |
