Thanks for all the feedback, guys.

"have the dino plex or the Marelli ignition?" ... How do I tell ? I know it's a single dizzy, with two coils, each of which has an ignition module mounted behind it in some kind of oversized heatsink .... is this the Marelli type ?

I'll check the dizzy cap tonight. If it's not the dizzy and it's not the timing, what could it be .... carbs ?

Thanks again ! :-}

Nev, You shouldn't have a timing problem if it was running OK before. If it jumped time then you may have a bigger problem. Not to play down what Angelo says, check it. But remember if there is a problem in the dist. assembly, cap. etc. then it may reflect in the timing check anyway.

I would certainly check the timing, put a timing light on the flywheel and see if the timing moves when it starts to miss, does this have the dino plex or the Marelli ignition? make sure none of the connections are corroded,and that there is a good connection, If you know someone with a laser temperature gun,(shoots a l.e.d laser beam) you may be able to pinpoint the temps of exhaust manifolds, in case it's a cylinder problem, you would be amazed how a simple temp check of each manifold can help pinpoint little gremlens....hope that helps.....Ang

Nev, It sounds like moisture in the dist. caps. I would check that first. Also check the carbon button located in the top of the cap and make sure no corrision has built up on the dist. contacts or rotor. They are famous for attracting corrosion, especially here in Florida.

I am experiencing the same problems on my 85 308 QV. Misfiring at about 3500-4000 rpm. Just changed the distributor caps & rotors. Could the problem be a poor connection, or maybe faulty suppressors? How do I tell if I have a bad suppressor? Thanks.

About a month ago I had a misfire on my 308GTS carb (euro, single dizzy) when cold, which I traced to one of the spark plug leads giving up the ghost.

Yesterday I've just started with a much more serious misfire (including popping and blowing back through both the exhaust, AND occasionally back up through the carbs, especially on overrun). She will run fine at lower revs, starting and pulling fine, but if you increase revs to about 5000 and hold it there, it will run fine for a few seconds, then start with a misfire which over the course of 5 or so seconds, gets worse and worse. She will rev all the way up to 8000, but with this misfire still happening.

As I say, I've replaced the plug leads recently. Whilst trying to find that misfire, I changed the plugs, checked the plug extension thingies, checked the dizzy cap and rotor arm (electronic ign), and checked the float level in the carbs (was spot on). The synchronisation on the carbs is within tolerable levels. There's no apparent leaks from in/around the carbs.

After I changed the plug leads she ran fine for about a week. Then she started misfiring back through the carbs a little bit (but I just thought it was my imagination), now this last week she's started with this. I've done about 400 miles over this period of time.

I'm thinking either carbs, or maybe timing ? If it's carbs, what could it be ? If it's timing, how do I check this on a single dizzy car ?

HELP !!! :-}
