When I switched to synthetic, there was no 2nd gear improvement when I took the car out. But now that it has had time to work it's way to all the corners, the shifting problem is gone, even on a 40 degree morning, it shifts fine. I guess there is a lock out pin that hangs up, once the old oil gets flushed out, it works again. |

I now use Shell Helix 75W/90 in all my Ferrari gearboxes. I buy it from a trucking supply company for ~$145 for 5 gallons. It's probably no better than the Mobil 1, but I like to think I'm supporting the F1 team.

I use Amzoil synthetic racing lube 75w-90 in mine; works great and drips at night. It's pricey! Who cares? The car shifts nice from start-up! |

I picked up some Mobil 1 synthetic gear oil today ($6.99/qt) and had it put in today; yes, a noticeable improvement... I wish I'd done it years ago! 2nd gear cold shifting issue is improved somewhat, but the overall cold shifting is very much better. Thanks for the feedback and suggestions.

I have used Swepco and Redline, and in my case, neither helped much with shifter smoothness. After hearing several success stories on FerrariList, I had Mobil 1 synthetic gear lube put in my 328 and it is an amazing improvement. Even my mechanic was impressed (he has preferred Swepco). The "cold second gear" syndrome is still there, but much improved as well. |

I have used RedLine transaxle fluid in all of my Ferraris. Try it, it even helps with the second gear stiffness when cold. |

I some trans synthetics are too thin and they don't shift well with it I have Swepco in my trans and it shifts perfect, POrsche 911 racers/owners swear by it |

From numerous previous threads, the overall concensus seems to favor the use of synthetic gear oil. I have it in mine and a couple of mechanics I know also endorse its use. It didn't seem to make much difference, in my case, as to the 2nd gear when cold. I still need to skip it until warmer. However, some guys report a remarkable improvement in overall smoothness of shifting with synthetic--Mobil 1and Red Line seemto be popular choices. |

The manual doesn't specify synthetic gear oil (was there even such a thing available in 1984?) in the transmission, but is there any reason not to use it, and would it help with cold shifting?
