Hans I found that the trick is in removing the studs (3) that are on the top of the compressor. The top bracket has the bushings in it and there are washers and shims between the compressor top and the bracket. The problem lies with the length of the top studs. You need to jockey around the compressor when you pull it down and the length of the studs prevents this. Also when I remounted the compressor a few years ago I used Bolts in the bottom mount instead of the studs.I did this because you can't remove the bottom bracked without removing either the studs on the compressor or the studs in the timing belt cover.I hope I explaned this correctly.

Never done it, so speaking from non-experience.

Someone commented that you don't have to remove the studs if you remove the mounting bushings from the compressor. Supposedly gives just enough room. Or so I hear.

Matt I replaced the compressor a few years ago and recharged it with freon 134a. System works good and even though it is marginal it helps in the 80-90 + days. But of you want to remove it I did not find it difficult.I just had to do it again in order to get my waterpump out.It is straight forward but you must remove most of the studs and you want to take it out from the bottom of the car (if you want to remove it from the top of the car you need to remove the engine cover). After you remove the wheel and inner fender start by taking off the alt. belt , remove the belt tensioner for the AC comp. , remove lower AC bracket , pull the studs , remove belt , remove alt. adjustment bracket , take off 4 nuts on top AC comp. bracket , drop compressor out through the bottom and then remove the upper bracket. I found that you need to pull the studs in the top of the AC compressor (3) in order to drop the compressor down and free it. This should take about 2 hours start to finish.

Matt what 308 do you have? On the carb 308 it isn't too bad but I had to put 2 nuts on the stud and loosen it from the compressor. On my 308 is was double ended threads. I think they are called studs but not for certain. You can also remove the brackets that hold the compressor to the timing belt cover. It will make for much more room on that side of the engine compartment.

The compressor is a bit of a pain to remove, but it can be done with some time and a little frustration. I removed my a/c compressor when I did the timing belts in my 308. Just makes life easier for inspection reasons and alt belt adjusting when needed. Just be sure to plug off the a/c lines so notheing gets in there.

I am thinking about removing the compressor. The air never really worked and I was wondering about removing the compressor? Are there beniefits to it's removal beside weight? Is it a hard thing to remove?
