It's very possible.I know when I just did my muffler and test pipes I had to retighten and loosen a few times to get everything perfect.

Some day I'll tell u about the job on my 400 I did.Wow.

Bruno, the donut gasket has more than likely repositioned itself when the pressure was relieved off of the system.

I'm going with gasket.did he reuse old or put in new.i tied old before and it wasnt right had to get new one's.My pipe rest on frame of my78.We'll it's the heat shield around it that touches the frame. I wedged a rubber insulator inbetween to cut vibration but thats not your problem. If it didnt do it before the mounts I dont see why it is now unless there is now a leak.

Oliver, I would say that there was a strain on the pipe resting on the frame. Now since the strain is relieved the gasket that was compressed is leaking. Take it back and have him tighten the exhaust pipe bolts or install a new gasket. Probably a donut gasket that has repositioned.

On a carb 308, With the emmissions pump connected. It will make those sounds. If it makes those noises with the belt removed, then there may be a leak.

Popping and backfire on downshift (or anytime back pressure lets off) is a classic symptom of exhaust system air leak. Start at the block and work to the back.

Is your emmissions pump connected? With it connected, it will make the rumble sound you indicated.

Just got the car back after having installed new motor mounts. Mechanic said exhaust ways setting on frame. Have noticed that the car is popping and back firing through exhast when I let off the gas and back down more than usual. It runs great and goes right up to speed very well. Sounds a little louder and rumbles more. You think I could have a hole in exhaust or pipes somewhere? If so what exhaust do you guys recommend without breaking my pocket book? It sounds kinda good. It's a 78 308.
