FYI~~~Brazillian F355 Spyder fixed. Notice a valuable board member contributed to solving the problem.

1997 Ferrari F355 Spider

Engine: 3.5 L / 8 cyl
Fuel: Fuel Injection
Ignition: Distributorless
Trans: Standard
Mileage: 5,900 mi
VIN: ZFFXR48B000108681

Affected Item: soft top
Condition: not working

_______________________ CLOSED W/FIX _______________________

One of the problems were the seat position potentiometers
sensors. Because of it the seats did not go to the right
place in order the top to open. Now, after 'bypassing' the
sensors it is possible to open it using the emergency
switch.

Thanks to Bob Harris and Tom Jones who helped me a lot.

_____________________ ORIGINAL MESSAGE _____________________

After releasing the upper lever the side windows will go
down

Despite the ignition is ON, park brake engaged, closed
doors, the soft top will not work. When pressing the switch
it will start what looks a intermittent failure signalling
beep.

I hope some of you to have expirence with this system.
Thanks in advance.

In our experience with the F355 & 355 F1 Spider power tops, the problem
is most frequently caused by the failure of the seat track/potentiometer assembly. The factory repair uses the original part, which is under-designed for this application, and it will fail again.

Our repair is a rebuild and modification of the existing potentiometer, and calibration of the potentiometer to the seat track. The modified potentiometer is guaranteed against failure, as long as the unit remains sealed and our calibration is not altered.

We will also check the control board, which is located between the seats, for faulty solder joints, and resolder as needed.

We need to receive both seat track assemblies, complete with potentiometers, and the control board. The calibrated track assemblies with modified potentiometers and control board will be returned to you or your service technician, ready to be reinstalled, within
two days of receipt.

It can also fail due to the potentiometer. It calculates how far the seats have travelled forward by use of a rotational potentiometer. If something gets in the way and stops the seat moving, it will throw the meter out of synch. It then will not know how far the seat will move forward and cannot start to activate the roof. It must then be reset.

Try to see if you can press forward to put the roof back. If it throws the roof forward again then that could be your problem. I had a similar thing happen to me. There was a loose nut(or washer can't remember which) in the seat rail and it threw the meter out of synch. IIRC the beeping sound would NOT come on, it would merely not do anything.

If its beeping, check the first set of parameters the car checks for before dropping the roof. These are stated below by someone else, but for reference, its the doors, handbrake, and roof back far enough. After those it checks and aligns the seats.

Good luck.

check the mirco swiches in the doors. I've seen these with water damage and cause problems with the roof not operating.

Frank P - do you know what this 'permanent' fix consists of? My father's F355 is experiencing this exact problem. The override behind the seats works - but the console switch does not. I do not think it is from lack of use - it was put up or down about once a week before the failure occurred.

That is an reoccurring problem with the 355 Spider. Performance Motorcars, 336.241.3451 or [email protected] supposely has a permanent repair.

Key On
Parking Brake On
Doors Closed
Unlatch
Pull back till you hear "beep" - stop
Activate top switch..seats should slide forward and stop...then the top will go down...keep finger on switch until seats return to original position.

The motor has 2 fuses mounted on it...are they OK?

There are 2 manual "overide" options in a contol box between the seats. There is a protection plug with a chord and switch on the end. Again ignition on, brake on. If still does not work below the panel is an outlet for a screwdriver to release all the hydralic pressure.

Two common problems: a sensor on the seat rail which sends message to computer. Air in the system for prolonged inactivity.
