Jeff, I did the same thing Bruce did except I bought the new console plates from Sodacom, and a new shift knob and shift plate. The flat black pieces look just fine in the car! The leather sounds like a neat idea as well.

Agreed. I'm just looking for the BEST solution. I like all of them so far. There is no hurry. I'd like to see them all side by side.

Sorry, didn't take pics. But all ya have to do is hold that black gooey piece in your hand and look at it....could anything else be worse looking?

There's Hero's & Zero's...and that black gooey plastic is a ZERO..imo.

I've covered them on 512TR's...I think that black plastic cheapens the interior. .

I have seen a 348 that had those sticky parts recovered in leather. In looked like what Ferrari should have done in the first place.

Jeff,

I took the other route. I bought the 3 new vents from Algars (they were in stock), and the 2 console plates and ashtray from Sodacoms (also in stock). Replacing all 6pc. took under an hour and a glass of Crown.

When I bought my car, the gummy vents and console were the focal point of the interior. This was not a place I wanted to cut costs. Perhaps CF will last longer and possibly look better, I personally opted for stock. IMO

Jean-Louis, perhaps you and I can start a search for someone local to the US. I'm sure that if we can find a good fabricator, I'm sure one of the F-chatters that has a reseller's license can set up jobber pricing.

Do you have an email address or contact #? There's also a drive on New Year's Day we are planning for the So Cal group that I wanted to tell you about... (Sorry Jeff, didn't mean to sabotage your thread here. :-))

Has anyone actuall ordered CF from this co in Germany and received it?

Carbon Fiber work is not that difficult to come by - with all the customization shops out there, I'm just surprised we haven't yet stumbled upon a good CF specialist in the US that can create some quality pieces for our F-Cars... Jeff, if you'll look into the European purchase, I'll try to find something here domestically in the US. If we want to do a group buy, that might make most sense.

Thanks Byron for the parts price list. These are HIGH prices. I wonder if we contacted this establishment with an order in bulk, (over 10 pieces) would they give us a nice price break? Does anybody want to give them a call? Perhaps a chatter in Europe? I'd be interested in a set of these for my interior at a greatly reduced rate. Maybe someone could get us a JOBBERS price? What say ye?

Thanks for all the help, Guys! I'll keep it all in mind. I personally like the idea of the Carbon Fiber, but I woonder what the cost is? I am not opposed to the idea of washing/ scrubbing it off, but I also visit Europe Monthly and would be able to bring home the Carbon Fiber inserts. I'll see if I can get a friend to read the website in German. Thanks all. I'll keep you posted.

Jeff, I just removed and cleaned the AC vents in my 348 2 days ago, which were also showing pretty bad signs of "melting." Similar to what Bruce did, I soaked the vents in very hot water, but I was able to get rid of all the gummy residue with just antibacterial hand soap and a regular scouring pad. It took some patience, but the finished product was very satisfactory (in my opinion). I'm going to work on the console next, but I gather it can be cleaned in a similar fashion. Hope that helps!

Jeff- I can't find the thread either, but if you are considering carbon fiber, http://www.dimex-automotive.de/index.htm has all the trim pieces for the 348.

Also, congrats on the TT. Make sure you post some pics once it arrives.

Jeff

Just remove the console and scrub the gunk off. Elbow grease, dish soap, and a scowering pad did the trick for me.

There is another thread that had a solution. I am not sure what it is. Here is what I did. Remove the parts (door handles, seat recliner, AC vents and console parts) I used denatured alcohol and fine steel wool to remove the worst gunk and then soap and water to finish taking it off. When clean I painted it with a satin finish black paint. I think the look is as good as original. A concour judge might not think so, but who cares.

Perhaps I'm a bit "premature" but I was wondering about the "melting" console in the 348. I recall a thread about this some time ago. I did a search, and came up with this one:
http://www.ferrarichat.com/discus/messages/112/105808.html?1031401318
However, it never really came to a conclusion. What are you 348 guys doing with these terrible looking dashes? Martin? My incoming 348 TT has this syndrome.........
Jeff
