Late '88s also have the 'long flexible tube' in lieu of the fiberglass piece.

My parts book does not have this as a separate part. It must be included with the fiberglass piece itself. Note that 89's changed and have a long flexible rubber tube with insulation on the outside instead of the fiberglass tubing. I have noticed that intake noise is greater than my previous 87 328 or any of the 308's I had. Perhaps this is why. Dave |

David, As was stated in my last post that John drug over to this one, I believe that it is your call. The only difference that I could tell was that on a cold start the noice level was louder (almost a hollow sound) until the electric choke system shut down and the idle was normal. TTFN Robert |

Okay, I checked my 1987 (Feb production date) 328 GTS (usa) and sure enough, the foam is there, as described.... So do I remove it, or leave it? |

John, I dragged this from another post: "One cold morning my 328 "burped" the black rubber baffle out as it was cranking and I have never replaced it. I could see no need for it either. TTFN Robert Mann" |

I looked at the part again. It is 11" long and 3-1/2" high, 2" deep. And I looked in my air tunnel with a flashlight. It starts right after the slot for water to drain & turns the corner 11". The face of the rubber is painted flat-black with a 2mm round-circle-print on the main face of it (where you can see it when installed). This makes for a mostly smooth surface. So when installed, you may not notice. If removed, you will clearly see the fiberglass mesh pattern in the tunnel just past the drain slot. My tunnel still has yellow & white reminants of the foam glued to the fiberglass. The previous owner said he did not remove it because he thought judges would take points away in concours. I'm remembering now that he thought it was to purposely quiet the engine noise for US dba ratings. |

I checked mine yesterday,88 328 GTS US model, and there is nothing like you describe inside the tunnel. Hmmmm, now my interest is piqued. What IS that thing for? |

In the passenger side air intake tunnel, where it takes a bend, you can stick your arm in the intake from the outside (all the way in) and pull out a yellow & white foam baffle about the size and shape of a full fanny pack. It just sits there and reduces the volume of air allowed to visit the airbox filter. I went ahead & pulled that joker out. My car sounds way better. It's like the same difference as when I added the K&N. Per Ferrari mechanics (who were not there for the design phase), it is supposed to "harmonize the air intake" or something for smoother breathing. Another rumor from race car guys is that the baffle was supposed to eliminate a high-speed wind howl. But when I'm going under 120mph, the car sure sounds like it's getting more air and I have noticed no vibration, howling or extra heat. I'd sware I have a bit more power too (probably just me). Can anyone confirm what this thing really does? Now that I've removed it, I just can't bring myself to put the hooky thing back in (been out for 14 months). |
