Thanks for the advice guys. I hope they did not reuse the old washer as they should have sufficient experience being the main agent here. I guess I'll monitor it for a while and hope it is the residue from the oil filter and does not recur. |

>>>Where can I buy a supply of "crush washers" for the oil drain plug for my 308/QV?<<< Porsche Dealers...911's use the same size..only aluminum...I buy 20 at a time...much better for the DIY'er and Gorillas as they crush easier reducing the chance of cracking the pan. |

mike 308 -- I order the DIN 7603A (solid) Cu "W60" sealing washers from the source (Global Metrics) shown in this post when I'm buying a significant amount (like 10 or more): http://www.ferrarichat.com/discus/messages/112/665.html I think I have a copy of their commonly stocked sizes, and if I can find it I'd be glad to email it to you (if you provide an email address -- you don't have one in your Profile).

Could be: Drain plug, where crush washer was re-used by the crew who did the filter/oil change. Residue from oil filter swap out, they ragged out some but left some to seap down. camcover end caps - notorious although my '91 is dry as a bone in this area so they dont all suffer. sump pan - again notorious and mine has just had this done at main agent. drive shaft seals - not common unless car has been/is little used. Mine has just had one side done at main agent along with the above sump leak. with whats just been done to your car I would suspect the drain plug and/or residual from filter change, especially if it was ok before, too much of a coincidence to be unrelated, but not absolutely impossible.

on the oringal post - if the drip is from the cam area wouldn't that be more indictitive of a cam gasket leak? |

any of the usual sources or probably a good hardware store. You can reuse the old ones if you anneal them - ie heat them until beet red and let cool - it will regain its properties to act as a washer again |

Sounds like a 'possible' oil drain plug leak to me. Either the old crush washer was re-used, not sufficiently tightened or both. |

My 348 just got back from a normal annual oil and filter change. I wanted to make sure all was well so I took a look under the car and noticed some oil on the fiberglass protective sheeting for the engine at the bottom. It was just a "weep" and wasn't sufficient to drip through on the garage floor. I was told by two mechanics that this is from the cam area (front of the engine) and is running down the block. The dealer said it could wait till the next service when I have to change the cam belt (3 years rule) as the engine will have to be dropped anyway. He advised me to keep checking the oil level, which I do anyway. Sorry for the basic description but I'm no mechanic. Should I worry, considering I only drive 4-5000kms. per year? A happy and prosperous New Year to all. |
