Gary,
Had problems starting my project car this weekend. Engine is from an 89 328 and has been run for only short periods of time up until now. Compression was good, plugs wet, and spark was there, but yellow-orange in color. I even tried a shot of starting fluid without even a "kick". A friend of mine mentioned that he had a Nissan (with electronic ignition also) that wouldn't start due to low battery voltage. I put a new battery in and it fired right up.

Gary -- You could look further upstream -- do the same kind of test with the coil output wire removed from the dist cap (i.e., confirm whether it does or does not spark to ground when cranking). The relative phasing between the dist rotor and dist cap is set by the spline joint between the drive coupling mounted to the end of the cam and the distributor shaft. If you didn't disturb these spline joint(s) in your service (and the cams are in their original positions) then it's got to be something in the upstream electrics (but the coil wire test will confirm that). Good luck with the hunt...

Hi,Steve
thanks for your response, I did pulled out the spark plug with cable attached to verify that there is spark when cranking. when I crank the engine, there is nothing. Engine just crank but not able to start, no backfiring or bucking. Yes, I have the US Dual distributor. the dist rotor has only one way to install it, can't even change the phasing if you want to.

Does that mean that you've confirmed the coil output(s) are truly firing during starter cranking? Is it bucking/farting during cranking or just nothing? Do you have the stock US dual distributor set-up for your i? -- and have you double-checked the dist rotor/dist cap phasing?

unable to start my 82 308 after I did valve clearances, replaced timing belts, and aligned timing. I pulled out the spark plugs and they are covered with fuel. It seems like my timing of firing is totally off, anyone has any idea? pls advise. Thanks.
