Just want to add a final post on air pump noise in case a newbie does a search at some future date. The pump does emit a high pitch sound during warm up, and this is normal - Don't Panic. Kinda cool - I left my car overnight at Shelton so they could check out the cold start. When I came by the next morning to pick up the car I mentioned to the service manager that I have yet to take her to redline. Gerard McShane, the service manager, said "Well, I did. I gotta tell you this is one of, if not the, strongest 355's I can remember driving. You got a real keeper here" I love this car.

That's 59 - 122 degF for those metrically challenged owners. Thank you Frank. |

Thanks Manu Car is Fabulous! Way better than my P turbo.. and now, I finally get the "F Car Thing"...the passion and the soul of the car. Acclimated to the gate shifter no problem and the balance on the suspension is incredible. The engine sounds like it could wind up to no end Have not redlined it yet Called Shelton and they said no prob, bring it in and theyll take care of it under warranty Rob - did some research and the pump injects air between 15-50 C Thanks to all again!

Dave, How is this system "cheating"? How would you design it? |

the pump is to 'cheat' the emissions requirements. Porker 928's have them along with many others. |

The pump system only adds air to the exhaust system at the exhaust manifold. It does not re-circulate back to the intake. It is normal to smell heavy(er) exhaust due to the fact that the catalytic converter is not at optimum efficiency at cold start. |

Yes, it's the auxiliary air injection system. Works only when engine coolant is below (if I remember corectly) 120 degF. It assists in reducing cold start exhaust emissions as the engine must run very rich on cold start and the added air assists the catalytic converter "light off" and get up to operating temperature. It definitely puts out a high frequency whine. Bosch Motronic cars have the pump, post 1989-90 (348 on). |

You guys are Great! That would make sense...I also noticed a lot of condensation during warm up and heavy exhaust fume smell...As I understand it, the pump plays an important part in start up, along with the by pass valve, in recirculating exhaust back into the intake... I've only driven this car 5 or 6 times and the experience keeps getting better and better! Thanks Again! |

I concur with Tom. I had the same noise from mine. The airpump costs a cool $700! I took mine apart and found the impeller all disintegrated. I removed it and put the pump back together. Yea, I know it doesn't do anything now, but it doesn't make any noise now, either. |

It's the electric air pump in the RR corner of the engine compartment. |

Just go my 97 355 not long ago...car is perfect, but I noticed something that sounds unusual. On cold start up (only after sitting overnight) on the first start there is a sound that sounds like a warning buzzard coming from the right rear section of the engine. NOT a bearing or belt. The pitch is electronic, almost identical to the sound you hear when you leave your key in the ignition with the engine off. Lasts for about 30 seconds, then goes away. Car runs perfect... I'm covered under factory warranty. Can anyone shed some light?
