Steve,

I recommend it. Have not had any chipping
problems, and the Glasurit paint matched
perfectly.

Reiner,

I am seriously considering having my top finished in body color, as is yours. Because the top is not metal, is there a problem with chipping? I think it really adds to the lines. Ferrari missed the boat by not doing the top in color.

Tom,
Thanks, my 348 is a 91. While the engine was out, I also had the updated drive pulley bearing installed.

SRA, I really like that color Ferrari. What year is your car? There was a problem with the bearing behind the cambelt drive pulley on the early 348's but I don't ever recall seeing a problem with the pulley itself. There is a service bulletin on the bearing problem but I don't recall one to do with the pulley. Interesting.

gulp! this is a scary failure mode!!!
The welds on this pulley are just small spot welds!!! I wonder if Ferrari ever had a
recall or a bulletin for this?

Reiner,

That is EXACTALLY what happened to my car! In my case a piece fractured and embedded itself into the belt, then went for a ride with the belt a few times, jumping time. The cure was to weld the new assembly together (so I am told). The pulley that failed was only 2 years and had 8k miles
on it.

SRA, can you be more specific on what piece
you are talking about? I saw a white 348
at Tillacks in Redondo Beach with head damage.
on that car, it appeared that a ring weld
on the lip of the bottom pulley failed,
the belt slipped out and mangled the ring,
which then caused valve interference. What
happened with your car?

Yes, definately auxiliary air injection. See the other thread.

Tom, It sounds just like what you are describing.

Jeff, actually all 4 wheels are on the wrong side. The color is Blu Chiaro, and is original And as to the re-build, to make a very long story short, a pc. from the bottom drive pulley (that only had 8k miles on it)stressed and came free, embedded in the belt, caused it to jump time. The pulley WAS a factory upgraded part. 2 months, and 20 valves later, I am back on the road.

Thanks for the help guys.

SRA: I think Tom is right about the air injection, my 348 makes that sound for about two minutes on cold starts.

If you don't mind, could you tell us why your 348 needed the top end rebuild (high miles/damage/leaks?), and how much work needed to be done once it was opened up? Just curious.

The profile picture of your 348 looks really nice, unusual color. Please pardon me for being a "snot", but your front wheels are mounted on the wrong sides.

This is the passive air injection for emissions. Suppose to do that. Not to worry. It will do this for a short period and then shut off. Right?

My 348 recently had a top end rebuild and runs well. My question is: after the initial starting, it idles quietly for about 15 seconds and then suddenly gets a great throaty sound. It happens abruptly, almost as if it is electrical. What causes this, and is it normal?
