As far as gaskets...will I need anything in addition to these? Cam Cover Gaskets that go along the rails - quantity 4. Spark Plug Seal Rings - quantity 12. Oil Drain/Return Port Gaskets - quantity 2. Distributor Gaskets - quantity 2. Vacuum Pump Gasket - quantity 1. Right Head Rear Exh. Cam Cover Gasket - quantity 1.

The parts manual also shows an O-Ring for the Vacuum Pump. I just recently installed a new Vacuum Pump since my old one's shaft had snapped. I don't remember seeing an O-Ring so my new pump is probably on the motor without one. What is this O-Ring for? Also the parts manual shows 2 options for gaskets, plain or with "Amianthus" - What the heck is this stuff?

Jeff: Also keep in mind that you will have to trim the excess lenghts off the gaskets, that come from Ferrari. Trimming is guess work, so compare to the gaskets that you remove.

Not all TRs have the rubber gaskets around the spark plug holes. Their use started somewhere in the 86-87 timeframe. Otherwise, you need to make sure you get the correct valve cover gaskets for your car. There are at least 3 different types that I've seen.

Also, there are gaskets under both the distributor bases, under the vacuum pump, and under both oil return connections.

Be careful with the clips holding the spark plug wires as they tend to get brittle with age.

While you're "in there" it would be a good time to measure the resistance of the spark plug wires and maybe even check the valve clearances.

Jeff: I recently replaced a leaky left valve cover gasket set, on my 88 TR. While at it, I refinished it with red crackle paint, sold to me by the dealer.

I agree with Tom, however, the oil return line is very tricky.......the hose attached is too short and stiff to freely move the piece. I was told it would be better to try and replace the valve cover with the return pipe already attached to the cover.

The 6 sparkplug gasket o-rings (on one side) were not cracked, so I did not replace them......why throw money away? One thousand miles later, and NO leaks.

Good luck!

Make sure you get the small gaskets for the oil return pipe at the bottom front of the rocker covers. Also check the condition of the hoses going to the block as they have a tendancy to get pourus with age. Don't forget to order the vac pump gasket! There are also 12 spark well gaskets made of rubber that you are going to need along with the rocker cover, distributor and right side end plate gaskets.

Very soon I'll be pulling off the cam covers for refinishing. It looks like the distributors will have to be removed, along with some plumbing for oil returns and crankcase ventilation. What specific gaskets will I need? Any pitfalls to watch out for? I'm doing this with the motor in the car, other than limited space is there anything else to be concerned with? Thank You in advance. Jeff
