I'm really surprised that the powder coating didn't hold up well. Who did the work?

IMHO, all cars should come from the factory with powder coated wheels.

Luckily, the severe damage was to the paint, with superficial scratches to the wheel. Those I buffed/sanded down.

Next came the bead-blasting. Actually the place I used (local) does "gem-blasting", simply using extremely fine semi-precious stone media. I didn't really notice a big difference between normal b-b and this, but it was still nice and smooth and cheap ($50Cdn for all four wheels)!

I used a zinc-chromate primer first (the yellow colour). I bought this @ Canadian Tire.

For the silver, I used Tremclad satin aluminum, I applied the decals and topped off with Krylon clear.

Peter,

can you describe in detail and tell us the products you used, also my wheels have some chips in them. How did you repair any imperfections?

I had my rims bead-blasted. Blasting is a better surface for the paint to grab onto, than hand-sanding.

Used the Groits stuff to the letter on my Alfa wheels and was not happy....It was not supposed to yellow and it did. It chips very easy (watch out who mounts your tires). A friend of mine sprayed $3.99 a can cheapo wheel paint on his Maserati Bi-Turbo wheels and he is now harassing me about how much better his wheels look with the el-cheapo method!! I think the real way to go is to have the job professionally done.

Brian,

Bang anything hard enough with a air wrench and it will chip. I agree with Paul. Not your fault.

I used your method of strip and paint...also using griots products (which are repackaged wurth paint products) sounds like the techs that worked on the car weren't too careful and it wasn't a matter of bad prep on your part...this is lacquer based paint and it will chip if hit with a tyre iron or if the wheel is scraped...I would feather-edge the chips...spray the feather-edged areas with a good primer-surfacer , blend in some more silver (I've had to do this) and re-clear

Hi guys
Had my rims powder coated two years ago, came out crumby. Not happy at all.
Last year, I hand stripped the rims down to the metal.I wire brushed the metal. I sanded. I paint preped. zinc primered, silver painted and clear coated using Geriots wheel paint kit. Rims looked great!
Drive car all summer, all is fine. This fall send it in for a fluid service including water pump.
The rims had to be pulled off to bleed the brakes and the rear passenger pulled again to get to the w/pump.
Problem is I detail the car and notice 10 or more good size chips on each rim from the lug wrench, more on the rear passenger rim.
I spoke with the tech at the shop, and Groits, and they both deny any wrong doing, and would like to see the dammage.
My question to the members is- I hand stripped the rims using 5f5 chemical stripper, the furniture stuff. I cleaned it using lacquer, and paint prep. I sanded the metal and wire brushed it. I used gloves and paint prep again. These rims were stripped to bare metal and cleaned before any painting.
Griots says they need to be bead blasted to work right.
What do you guys think?
Strip and clean or bead blast?

Thanks Brian
