thanks kurt, I was assuming the 328 is like my 86 mondial, on my car I can open both doors from either side, but I should point out the PO installed an alarm system (which I don't use) so maybe that is what allows both sides to operate the same. |

Plogli and TomD, you are both right, but.... - on the '86 the left doorlock controls the right, but not the other way around, the right lock actuator is just a slave - on later models you can unlock/lock both locks from either side, that is both actuators contains circuits to control the opposite side. Lock bouncing can be eliminated by adjusting the mechanism inside the door - trial and error method. FYI I installed a Clifford alarm in my '86 and at the same time changed the actuators so they could be controlled by the alarm, i.e. keyless entry. Very convenient and reliable. |

you might try locking/unlocking from seated position inside the car, might give some evidence of whether there's a specific problem with the key hole/lock itself. i've also encountered the same problem Thomas mentioned, with the locks bouncing back up, but occurs only very occasionally('89 328). Usually, just open/close door again, then it works. I have a problem with drivers door latch that if a fair amount of water gets inside the door panel, a while later the door latch won't fully engage and the door won't close fully. Net is, the mechanisms inside these doors don't hold adjustment that great, probably do to Italiano design... |

I have a not dissimilar problem on my '88 328. About 25% of the time (usually when I am most worried about the car's security) the locks go down and then immediately come back up. No amount of key jiggling, door closing or cursing seems to help. However, I can try a short time later and they'll work. There doesn't seem to be any predictable pattern to it. Any thoughts? Tom |

The actuators make a noise all of their own. You can't miss it if they are working properly. It could just be an adjustment. On my 78' one of the doors would lock but not unlock and it was an easy adjustment. The actuators are a box that are white or gray in color and they are fairly large. Remove the door panel and lock/unlock the car and see what is going on. If you plan on doing this with the door open you must flip a little metal rotating lever on the side of the door. I am not sure what it is called but it allows you to not lock the doors when they are open. You will need to flip this over so you can lock/unlock the door when it is open. HTHs. |

both sides should lock with the turn of the key in either door. Try locking the passensger side to see if it works. some times the locking mech becomes disconnected - there is a cotter pin in there that connects the nechanism to the door latch. If you can't lock the passenger door from your passenger side that is your issue. The door panels are easy to remove |

Searched the archives but could not find anything on this problem. I have an '86 328 and according to the owners manual it's supposed to lock both doors when you lock the drivers door with the key. I can hear something in the doors clicking on both sides but only the drivers door is locking. Anyone have any suggestions for trouble shooting this? Is taking the inside door panels off necessary and/or difficult? |
