Hans and Matt,

ANSA mufflers certainly seem to get this patina. I bought a quart of Hi-Temperature Exhaust/Manifold Paint from Hirsch Automotive in anticipation of refinishing the muffler. My 1976 GTB has the narrow, body-colored valance, so the muffler shows regardless. I'll give it a try, but I think that in time it will look like this again. It's really not all that bad.

Looks just like mine, too. Kind of like my head - bald in the middle.

Barry,

That is precisely what my Euro 85 w/Ansa looks like. I'm interested in what people have used. Maybe I'll try some of what is being recommended (VHT Wrinkle Plus Coating, #SP-201). Is this available at the hardware stores?

By the way, is the Ansa stock on Euro cars? I've always wondered.

Can't you scuff the muffler with some 400 grit sand paper before painting with hi temp paint for better adhesion?

On stainless steel stuff you've got the no paint option, but the Ansa mufflers are carbon steel so they really need some rust protection (even if it has to be refreshed occasionally). My experience with them was the same -- every 3~4 years (20~25K miles) it needed a repaint.

This thread begs the question: Why paint the muffler/headers at all? There was an interesting thread on this in my Lotus site and the overwhelming consensus was that your car is happier with the SS unfinished. Prevents corrosion and allows heat transfer to be the way the manufacturer intended. Perhaps Ferraris are different?

Eastwood High temp exhaust paint works well. Lasted me about 3 years and 15,000 miles. It is just now showing serious wear. It should be good for about another year, then should be repainted. I recommend it.

I probably have the same muffler. It's a Euro-spec Ansa with a bald spot in the center.

Steve,
I was just out in the garage and found the partially used can of VHT I used on the BBQ. It is VHT Wrinkle Plus Coating, Product #SP-201 Black.

I think VHT makes a high temperature wrinkle finish. Seems like I used some in the past on a BBQ grill.

I think I've got an Ansa muffler on my 77 and there appears to be a hot spot in the center of the muffler. It is presently painted with wrinkle finish black paint but this section is burnt off . Its an oval shape about 6" x 8" in size. Does anyone know of a high temp wrinkle paint that I can cover this with? Without a cover like the later model 308's I'd like to make it look clean. Thanks
