I would think alignment issues might be afoot. Seems like you would hear a bearing. Even a slight misalignment can overheat and ruin a belt in short order.

My 512M road car seems to be going through alternator belts and my mechanic can't explain why. I have had the car for approx. 7 months and had no problems until recently. I had driven it 2,000 miles until the initial failure last month. I replaced the stock ECU with a Koenig chipset that significantly increased hp and torque. Shortly after the Koenig chip was put in the first belt failed. I had punched the accelerator fairly hard on an on-ramp and when letting off the throttle the belt simply disintegrated with pieces coming through the back grill. I had the belt replaced by my mechanic. It promptly failed the next day. I suspected that tension may have been an issue as he may have had it loose. He replaced it yet again, this time also replacing another belt(didn't specify which one) and did not charge me to fix it the second time. Well, once again within two days and some hard acceleration it went up in smoke. Any thoughts? The engine-out major service was done 2.5 years ago and only 4,000 miles ago. None of the other accessory belts have failed to me knowledge(i.e AC belt). Would the increased power/torque have anything to do with this problem? Any specific brand of belt necesssary(Pirelli is factory issue). Any thoughts would be helpful.
