True, true.

What I also like are the 'reverse snobs' who try to tell you that you're driving a kit car. I usually just answer, "The car may be phony, but the repair bills sure seem real!"

I'm sorry but it isn't usually that difficult to smell the BS within a few minutes of conversation.

These guys know who they are and they are fooling themselves if they think they are fooling any of us.

I find I dont usually need to ask trick questions, they usually trip themselves up often enough without assistance.

Let's meet for coffee this Saturday. I want a ride! Better yet, how about letting me drive it? Is the body composit or Alum. like the F-40? (they will either call you on the trick or give you a wrong answer.) Let them have thier fun.

Ask for a ride :-)

Ask about the vibration from the engine. Since the engine is a structural member and bolted to the carbon fibre chassis (similar to F1), I believe that you experience some vibrations, due to the extreme rigidity of carbon fibre. I understand that Ferrari had to go to extreme lengths to make the motor smooth enough to make this acceptable for a road car. Note: this is only from what I have read, I have no personal experience.

I think John is looking for an instant BS meter. VIN won't do any good as it is difficult to check on it whilst shooting the breeze on the barstool.

Insinuate that you think it's a V8, see if he corrects you. How long does it take to change tops? (with practice I'm told it's about 15-20 minutes) What year? Only the '95 model is US legal, as the later ones would be required to have OBD, which they don't. Supposedly the later cars can NOT be legally imported. I was told by a legit owner that only 52 cars are US legal, and probably 2 have been totalled.

Can't think of any definitive exam questions other than that off of the top of my head.

Here's a good one, ask how many cylinders it has. Most will say 8. All the F50's are now old enough to have traded hands a few times, so current owners may not know how Ferrari sold off the cars.

Ask them what # out of the production it is. Then ask them where that is stamped. If you need help on that, I can point you in the right direction.

Aside from the VIN and pictures I would ask how they got it? I believe it was very though to actually buy one. I think for the longest time you could only 'lease' one from Ferrari and eventually buy it off. Granted some ended up on the secondary market, but there aren't that many to begin with. Ferrari gave the right to lease only to its top clientele who already purchased other Ferrari cars before and didn't flip them for a quick buck.

If someone claims to have an F50, and you're pretty sure its BS, what are some good questions to ask to expose them and get them to admit they don't actually have one.
