You don't leave cars with Automatic transmissions parked in neutral, why would you leave a car with a manual transmission in neutral? Relying on the handbrake is asking for trouble. |

Ming -- There's no downside to parking a manual with a gear selected (any gear works, but the lower gears give better holding power) so I don't see what benefit you think you're getting by not leaving a gear selected for safety. On the flat, it's not a huge deal if your parking brake has demonstrated good performance, but on an incline definitely select a gear at rest. I'll make a small wager that in the 456 OM there is a short "Parking" paragraph in the Running Instructions saying "on steep hills put it in 1st" or something like that...have you checked? |

The bad hand brake is actually a maintenance problem, rarely a design problem. I can say the same about my wife's Ford Exploder, but the reason it su*ks is lack of use and maintenance. The star wheel in the drum rusts due to lack of use, same in Ferrari's because the parking brake on many of the cars is a drum brake, mechanically actuated, inside the rear disc brake. That said, because of the maintenance and use issue, I will never trust the p-brake in a car I am not familliar with. |

My car can be started without pushing the clutch but I always do. And I always have the car in gear when parked. "Handbrake"? On my Lotus it's a Placebo Handle. You feel good pulling it but it doesn't do crap. |

Ming, I always leave the shifter in either 1st or reverse when parking, with the E-brake engaged, no matter what vehicle. A Ferrari you have no choice as the E-brake won't hold worth a s--- |

Tx. Dave -- I've never thought of this before. I will make sure the clutch is depressed when starting the car. |

Tx. Omar, Oh Yes. I totally forgot about the safety rule as you just can't start in most of the Automatic transmission cars but you would jump forward/backward in most manual ones. Is there any manual F-car would not start with gear engaged? One more silly question. I know someone have a habit of parking the car with 1st/reverse gear engaged. But I prefer to be in neutral as long as the Park brake is OK. Any comment?

Also, it reduces the drag caused by load of spinning primary drive shaft, not much but all helps minimise the load the starter motor, hence battery has to face. Kinda like starting her up with the lights switched on, won't kill it but why push things harder than they need to be! |

so that if you forgot to put the selector into neutral first the car won't jump forward (or backward as the case might be) I thought you had to depress the clutch to start, like on NSXs, but f-cars you just have to put her in neutral and start her up....or hold down clutch and start her up...either way, I think the first is less wearing on the drivetrain though |

I was told to depress the clutch to start the car in the owner's manual. Could someone tell me why? Cheers PS:King must be real mad to see my thread for such a silly question |
