Hey Guys,

Good news - it turned out to be a loose connection in the fuse box. Easy fix, tighten the pin and she was good to go.

Thanks again for your help

Did any of you make it to west palm beach for Cavallino ??? God it was cold...

Glen -- Another quick way to confirm that the fuel pump system is generally working (or not) on each side(everything except for the relay) is shown in the TR WSM -- (with engine off and key off) remove one of the fuel pump relays and connect the top center vertical female 30 terminal of the relay socket to the bottom center horizontal female 87 terminal on the relay socket with a short wire/jumper and the corresponding fuel pump should run (if everything else -- fuse, motor, connections, etc. -- is OK). Use a fairly large gauge jumper wire (like 16 ga or larger) since the current will be something like 8~10 A, and the circuit is always "hot" (even with the key "off") so don't let a free end of the jumper wire inadvertantly touch anything else. Should at least give you an audible check of the fuel pumps, and you can swap other same PN relays around to quasi-check the relays. (But as Ric suggested, easiest 1st thing to do is put a timing light on each bank and confirm if spark is or isn't present when running on one bank).

PS Have you removed/checked the white connectors at the bottom of the fusepanel to check for frazzled pins/sockets?

The TR does not have separate TDC sensors for the left and right bank, so it's not likely to be one of those if the car still runs.

Check the following:

Fuel: There's a fuse for each fuel pump. Make sure they're both good. If you turn the key on, but don't start the car you should hear the fuel pumps run for about 1/2 to 1 second. Try pulling the fuses alternately and repeating to see if you can still hear one pump run in each case. If not, you've got a bad fuse, bad connector somewhere or a bad fuel pump.

Fire: The ignition coil packs are near the back of the "main" part of the engine bay, on the left and right side. Use a timing light and check for fire from the coil packs to the distributors (item A). Also, check the connector going to the coil back (item B). If one coil is not firing, you could have a bad coil pack or a bad connection from the ECU to the coil pack.

Glen,

You will see two wires with tamper proof clips toward the back of the engine (right between the alternator and compressor). They tend to stick up a bit upright. Make sure they are tight -- if one jiggles loose you will get the same effect -- the car will run at low power. To test start the car and then jiggle each of those connections - if loose you will hear a change in the idle then that probably part of your problem. Good luck on this fix.

Glen: Check the main coil wire first, for loosenss, as Jeff recommends......this is a definite source of fire in the converter......raw gas is just being pumped in. MOST important thing to check.

This same thing happened to my 88 TR.....ran on 6 cylinders, all of a sudden. Turned out it was the fuse panel, fuel pump connection gone bad (a burnt brown look). This is a VERY common problem on the TRs. I had to replace the whole thing, about $700.

If OK, then check the TDC sensor, per Mike.

Glen, have you checked the coil-to-distributor cap wires? They can slip downward due to road bumps and vibrations, making only partial contact. Make sure they are secure before anything else. There is a lot of info. in the archives about this issue. TRs can run just as smooth on 6 as they can on 12 cylinders, just low power output. Also verify all other electrical connectors are clean and dry like the ones under the fenders. Good Luck. If you have spark, then it's a fuel delivery situation.

It's probably a TDC sensor (one for each bank). Same thing happened in my 308QV (running on 4 instead of 8). Mechanic said that was the first thing to test, replaced it, and instantly fixed the problem.

I know this might have been mentioned before, but if any one could point me in the right direction, i would appreciated it. Took my 90TR for a Sunday drive, after 15 mins it felt like it was running on 6 intead of 12, no back fires, very smooth but 1/2 the power. Is the fuse box a good place to start?

Thanks in advance

Glen
