Okay guys here is the deal: The XR700 boxes are about $200 each as I recall. My mechanic installed them, but I watched and saved the instruction sheets. Basically, you remove the points and condensers, and add the photo electric receiver piece in the distributor. Under the rotor you install a trigger wheel. The boxes are installed under the coils. The coils don't necessarily need to be replaced, but after 22 years, is not a bad idea. I have Bosch blue coils, I have seen used the Lucas High Energy coils, and MSD; I'm sure they are all fine. My mechanic did this during a 30K service, so don't know the exact labor cost, but figure about 4 or 5 hours to install, make up some brackets and get it all adjusted. That's about all I know, other than it has been entirely trouble-free, and my mechanic swears by them. I believe he has installed them in 308's, 246's, 330's and 365's. He feels it is required for a "daily driver".

David Handa, I'd like to know more of what was involved in your conversion to the system (costs, actual mods to the distributors, who did the work,etc...).

I did a norwood conversion on my 77 308 gtb.
it uses the MSD 6A box, a $12 chevy cap and chrysler magnetic pick up. runs great.

There are a number of systems available. My mechanic has done literally dozens with the Crane (formally Allison) Fireball XR700 system. This was installed in my 78 308 GTS a little over a year ago. You will need two units, one for each distributor, and there are specific instructions for use with the Marelli distributors. The nice thing about this is that they cost about the same as buying the four sets of points and condensers, and this is a "one time" cost. I believe the MSD system offers a more powerful spark, but this one seems to work just fine. The boxes are rather easy to conceal below the coils. And this whole system is easily removed and returned to its original configuration (reversible). Car starts much easier when cold than before. There are "direct fire" ignition systems being offered by Nick on this list; they have obvious advantages, but the initial cost is a bit higher. No more expensive caps and rotors though!

Has anyone switched over their point ignition 308 to an electronic ignition? Which is the best brand and easiest to install? Thanks.
