The two connectors on the left side of the engine bay, in front of the coolant tank. You can't quite see them in this image, but they're approximately where the arrow points. I clean them with a soft brush (toothbrush) aided by electrical contact cleaner (brake cleaner in a pinch). Treating the pins with Stabilant 22 also helps.

The official cause of the oil cosumption (as related to me by a VERY trusted source) was engine bay connector problems that resulted in an intermittent condition where one bank's ignition fired and the other did not (typically, 5-8 didn't fire). It doesn't take long to "wash" the oil off the cylinder liners with fresh, unburned gas, resulting in rapid ring and/or liner wear. The problem was widely reported as ring failure (bad batch of rings, etc.), but this was eventually traced to the other problem. Models affected were all 1980 injected V-8 models and part of 1981. My own S/N 36471 was part of the recall. The connectors continue to be a source of problems for these cars, even into the QV years. I've repaired at least two or three cars, simply by disconnecting that connector, cleaning it properly, and reconnecting. |

Some 2V inj. cars are known for having high oil consumption. Some due to seals leaky and others due to cracked pistons. Ferrari rebuilt some of these engines under warranty. Why did the 2V inj. cars have cracked pistons but this wasn't common on the carb cars? I thought the low end was similar? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks. |
