Going to wider tires on stock rims does make a noticeable improvement. I did the rears first, the the improvement was slight. When I did the fronts, it was MUCH more noticeable when pushing the car hard through a turn, especially on a roadcourse track. Well worth the change. |

V.Z. I'm using the plus size tires with 17 inch wheels (8 inch front, 9 inch rear). I bought the wheels largely for cosmetic reasons since I don't really like the convex wheels much and hoped for some handling inprovement. The handling improvement is much greater than expected and I am using the same model tires. People have put 225's and 245's on the stock rims, but I have not heard any opinions on whether or not this is an improvement. I would think not much. Although there is more tread, the fatter tires might actually be less responsive with stock wheels, but I don't know. Either way, fatter tires do result in a little more steering effort at low speeds and more chipping around the rear wheel wells. BTW, you can use 255's with the 17X9 wheels. They are slightly taller than stock. The 245's are slightly shorter than stock. However, the car seems extremely well balanced with the 245's and I figure the 255's might tilt it towards understeer, so I will stay with what works. Dave |

Dave328, could you please describe the subjective diff between stock vs. oversize tires, since you have both sets? This is first i've heard of using oversize on the stock wheels(maybe i'm too much of a shutin, huh? ). |

I think the "sand blasting" effect of tires flinging stuff up on the car is more a function of the tire compound than the tire width. Either way though, it is not that big a deal. Put some "StoneGuard" on if it bothers you, or get a bottle of touch-up paint. These are "used cars" after all.... :-) |

John, I have used Bridgestone SO3's with good results. I have a set in the stock sizes and a set of 17 inch 225's front and 245's rear. The wider tires do throw up more debris and there is more chipping. Try tirerack.com. They have a lot of comparison tests and feedback from customers. Pretty much any of the top brands are fine. John: You're only talking about around 3/4"-7/8" of additional rubber per tire, so that's less than 1/2" at most on the outside exposure that might "fling" stuff. I haven't found it to be a problem, and you know how fanatical I am about my car's appearance. |

I'm curious if the larger tires fling more stuff against the paint. I agree that they must handle and look better. But do they cause more chipping behind the wheel wells? |

I had a typo in my last post. The rear "up'd" size should have been 245-45/16's, as Todd stated. Mike |

On my 86 I have Toyo/Proxes. Front are 225/50 ZR16 and the rears are 245/45 ZR16 http://www.toyo.com/tires/index_frame.html John, I went up a size on my car as well...definitely a difference in performance and they make the car look a bit more modern IMO. I feel as though the original tires make the car look somewhat dated...as is the case even more so with a 308. Good luck dude! btw, post a pic of that bad boy! Todd |

I like my Michelin Pilots. Have about 4K on them, corner pretty well, ride great and the ware is minimal. Cost is a little high. I think they are worth it. |

Yokohamas are great tires, good price, and Tire Rack is a good source. Models to check out are AVS-Sport, A0032R, and AVS-ES/100's. If you still have your stock rims, you might consider up'ing your tires one size. That really makes a difference. On your stock rims, run 225-50/16's on the front (yes, that's the stock size for the back), and 245-50/16's on the rear. Many 308 and 328 owners do that (I'm one of them) with no clearance problems.

I have Michelin Pilots and I love them. I cannot say how much they cost because they came on the car (bought it 2 months ago). They are oversize at 275/40 ZR 17 on the front and 225/45 ZR 17 on the rear. |
