Peter there are 2 different sensors in the system 1 is for the oil pressure gage which is located near the oil filter . This shows PSI on the gage. the other is mainly for LOW oil pressure and usually sets the light on when the oil pressure is in the 3-8 psi range. So if your oil pressure reads normal then this sensor is shot. If your gage is not showing oil pressure in the normal range and this light is on then you need to look deeper into the problem. |

My 77 will do the same thing. At idle the light will flick weakly on. A rev of the engine and it will go off. Sometimes just the opposite. At speed the light is on until you back off the throttle and it flickers off. Their is no real consistency. It does not do this all the time. The gage reads normal and has some normal movement but does not read a pressure problem. |

Try removing the sender mentioned and install a temporary mechanical gauge to confirm true pressure. It's likely the sender is failing, and this test will confirm it if so. |

Ooops! You're right Matt. I'm so influenced by those 360s , so small details based on technology! I almost forgot that i was talking about a 308. |

There is the oil sending unit though that sits in front of the oil filter. I think it is gold in color. It sends the info to the gauge. |

"the system diagnosing wrong and flashing the light for no reason" FYI, Early 308's have no computers or subsystems to give warnings or bad indicators. It is all mechanical or electrical. In this case, 26 year old stuff. |

Maybe the problem is with the oil light? Or the system diagnosing wrong and flashing the light for no reason. Do you have power loss when the light comes? Anyway i'm not a pro. It's better to leave it to them. |

OHHHH like the low fuel. Mine has never gone off so I have never seen it. If that is the case, What is the oil pressure doing? Rise and fall with rpm? what is it reading at idle and at speed? Have you checked the level right after shutting off the engine? |

Matt you should. It should be on your oil pressure gauge. Little read light on the left. It is actually on the gauge itself not near the other lights. |

Do you oil pressure gauge rise and fall? I know the senders tend to not read completely accurate after sometime. It is in front of your oil filter. I hope that you aren't losing oil pressure. HTHs. |

Peter, Which light are you referring to? I have a 78 and I do not have an oil light. |

First off, thank you to all that field questions I post! This is a great chat tool! The oil light goes on and off at idle and sometimes stays on at higher RPM. Would this be a indication that the oil pump is going south ( or may have alredy done so?? !). I look forward to a reply or two. Thank you, Pete |
