Just a (probably completely non-helpful) note of interest. When my new-to-me '78 308 was major serviced recently, they couldn't pull the engine because they couldn't get that shield off. Turns out it had been replaced previously and they had riveted it in rather than using screws/bolts. Must be another of those common problems... |

I'm sorry I don't remember. I think I just left it to the body shop. The owner has a 360, so I knew he'd do it right. |

Jerry, I think that JRV misunderstood the condition of the baffles. They are gone beyond repair. Chunks are missing. I think I will do the same. What did you do with the insulation?

Tommy, I disagree with doing a spit and tape repair. I took mine to a reputable body shop and they welded in new pieces. When I saw the outcome I could not believe it, you can not even tell it was done unless you are actually looking for it. I think they charged around $250.00 or so which was well worth it to me. Now it is fixed right and fixed forever as I never drive or expose the car to rain. |

Do you recommend doing the same on the firewall ? |

Take all the old cloth/padding out, wire brush the rust, spray it with rust converter, then buy a race car heat shielding blanket cut to size and reinstall. Most all 308's rust back there because the padding crap holds moisture like a sponge. No biggy, just another minor speed bump on the highway to happiness.

JRV, What can I do about the insulation. What is the best replacement for it. Even if I don't fabricate new metal the heat will do major damage with out it. |

All these older cars get rust, so what, life goes on, you fix what you can. The only rust that is of "TRUE" concern is frame rust, like older Porsches, that could cause a car to break in half. The rust on 308's is simply cosmetic rust and they all get a little in a few places. |

I have removed the muffler shield and insulation today just to find out that both of the sides (sheet metal) that are welded to the frame have been totally rusted out. The storage compartment floor is fine as it was coated. The insulation in the baffles and above the shield is ruined.I'm asking for suggestions. Do I need to fabricate new pieces or they are available ? Also what kind of insulation is best suitable for this application ?
