Rex, thanks, that was my next question, "why the trouble lights" (MIL Lights), as you state no OBD II no double O2s to trigger a MIL. need a read on the MIL error codes. Don't have to but it could make the problem easier to hunt down.

Rob, the biggest reason I removed my cats was to remove the fire hazard from an overheating cat. Sounds beer too and the car runs 5 - 10 degrees cooler on hot days. Thats worth it in my bok. |

I think Rex is right. Just removing the cats shouldn't throw an error. The O2 sensor is upstream of the cats to start with. The cat over temp sensors are not connected to the DME. |

512TR is Motronic 2.7. So, if one removes catalytic converters, there's no post-converter o2 to throw an error. Motronic should be able to compensate for less backpressure, this is a minor reduction. What are your errors then? JRV's ideas are good, maybe also other electrical and/or mechanical reasons, too. Ground problems do this symptom. Why remove the cats, want more sound? The cats really don't bother performance that much (2-4 hp). |

under throttle back fire - intermittent ignition system problem, bad plug wire/loose coil pack connection, etc. |

this was under full throttle, the car has no cats so the check engine lights blink all the time cus the sensors are wondering what happened to the cats. It does it very rarely Thanks |

You've seen no "Check Engine" lights? Check for exhaust leaks. Check the little asbestos donuts that are between the headers and the catalytics, catalytics and muffler, etc. Also, look at the headers and pipes themselves for cracks. If fresh air has a way into the exhaust stream, backfiring will result when you jump off the throttle.

I would no drive the car until the back firing problem is found. If's it's bad enough you could melt a piston due to detonation, burn a valve or melt the cats if it's dumping to much fuel or over heat if running to lean. |
