I do not know whether an 85 model has the extra aux. air valve that an 82 has. It looks like a heater control valve on an older american car and has a vacuum hose going to it and is located near the air valve you just removed. You can check that valve if you have one by applying vacuum and removing vacuum and watching the diaphragm move the valve arm.

Herbert,

Thanks for the advice I really appreciate it. I verified that the auxiliary air valve does in fact close when it becomes hot. I also checked the terminals with a meter and they are providing 12 volts DC.

The reason that I am checking the auxiliary air valve was because the fast idle when cold wasn't working very well. When I checked the auxiliary air valve it seemed as though it had the ability to open the entire width of the diameter of the tube. This was why I had asked if the auxiliary air valve was fully open.

Do you know of any other components that work in conjunction with the auxiliary air valve when the car is cold and the fast idle condition occurs.

Thanks........Russell

That sounds about right. Now connect a battery to the two terminals, positive to one and negative to the other and after a few minutes the housing should get warm and the valve should close. If not it's bad, if so, check the connection on the car that goes to the valve. Start the car with a test light connected to the two terminals and the lamp should light. If it does and the valve closes, Guess again, you are working on the wrong thing.

Hi,

I own a 1985 308 QV and would like to determine if I need to replace the auxilary air valve. I have removed the auxilary air valve, and looking at the valve when it is cold it appears to be halfway open/closed. Since I don't have another auxilary air valve to compare against, I can't determine if this is the normal open position for the valve.

Thanks........Russell
