Too Bad Ferrari wants a arm and a leg for that hose.

Here is the picture of the Hose's. The hose on the left is the old style (hence the split) and the new one # 181599 is the update. The small hose
#50 in the parts manual, is updated to the same style as #45(being a silicon hose).Upload

Tom-and everyone else...
That hose right above the small hose is the one prone to spliting down the middle. We have seen this failure at least 6 times.

You can tell if you have the old hose just by looking at it. And that in the picture is it. The new hose has a "wrap" look to it, and has a part # of 181599. Update this asap.

Here are a few of the pictures that I took. The intake nuts were loose when I went to remove the intake. Note the distorted gaskets.Upload

Here is the parts book picture of the hoses.

On early 550's they were having a problem with #45 spliting down the middle. I have seen it 6 times. The replacement is a silicon hose.

#50 is also updated to a silicon hose.

The hose that fits on #38 is also prone to coming loose. The hose is not pictured on this page, but it is the hose that runs to the overflow tank.

These are the common problems that we have been seeing. Hope this helps.

Cheers

The problem on the 550 is a small hose connecting a pipe out the back side of the water pump housing to an aluminum tube for the heating system. The hose is like a 3/4" piece of heater hose less than 2" long. The clamps on this hose are usually loose or possibably not on the hose correctly. IF the clamps are in an accessable position and are located on the hose correctly, they can be tightened but usually the rearward clamp cannot be accessed because of the way it is turned. Then it is remove the intake time. I have pictures of one I did at work. I'll post them tomorrow.

If this is not a warranty issue, one way to find a pesky little leak is to use a cooling system pressure tester with an adapter for BMW, and pump the system to 20 psi, let sit overnight, then crawl around looking for the wet spot, so to speak. Easy on the clamp, too much torque is as bad as not enough.

Engine's not hot, so it's way easier. This is s.o.p. for race prepping these babies.

david - what year is your car? my understanding is that sometime during the 2000 MY production they realized that some of the clamps and hoses they were using for the 550 coolant system were garbage. many 550s had such things replaced under warranty (eg: my 06/99 build did). i saw a number of 550 service records that showed coolant hose and clamp tweaks and then eventually (when the tweaks were only short-lived fixes) larger-scale hose and clamp replacements.

20 degrees? yikes - the poor baby! :-)

doody.
