Bret, I too had oil on one of my belts. Arguably, some was coming from the seal area. However, at least on QVs, Rathar than get lots of oil onto the belt itself, leaking seals tend to drip down onto things like the alternator & ruin it(ask me how I know). I went nuts trying to figure out how so much oil was getting on my forward belt. Finally I decided to just do a shotgun solution like you are. When I pulled my forward cam cover, the pulleys had 6-pointed 'stars' on their inside!! A streak of oil was originating at each point of the hexagonal pulley retaining bolt's head!! Turns out that the bolt also seals the oil passageway hole down the center of the cam. There's an o-ring that goes over the bolt after the washer is slipped on it. The O-ring is squeezed into a groove around the bolt hole. One of my o-rings had a broken piece crushed between the washer & the end of the cam. The other o-ring was hard as a rock & cracked in a couple of places!!!

Before I pulled the engine the belts had so much oil on them they were literally throwing it up through the grating and onto the back window. HA, I laugh at the warning on the belt, no contact with oil. Seriously though, oils and belts don't mix well at all. I think that my car was leaking out behind the pullies, I really haven't found the leak to be honest (there were several I know) so I am changing all the seals in this area, including the balancer seal. |

My belts didn't leave any residue either. I'd be concerned that either they were contaminated with something, or the belt itself is degrading. Either way, replace them IMHO. |

Mine timing belts will leave a little black on your fingers but mine isn't oil. Most will do this especially on the older 308s that don't have the rear protection cover. |

Last weekend when I checked the timing belt tension I noticed they are a little greasy i.e. I had black fingers. I think it is coming from some little oil leak on this side of the engine. I do not remember that there was any oil when I checked the belts earlier. Can that cause the belts to slip one tooth? |
