The service manual for the 456 does list the procedure. It reads:

The operator may request decoding of faults stored in the electronic control unit whether these are present at the time of the diagnosis or occurred by chance then disappeared (e.g. radio interference induced by external environment).

Proceed as follows:
1. With the car at a standstill (do not turn wheels if the car is raised) check that the ignition is off.

2. Make a jumper on pins A and B on the diagnosis socket near the ECU.

3. Turn the ignition key ON and check the ABS warning light, which should hve lit in the meanwhile. If after 1.7 secons it goes off and stays so, the ECU shows no electrical faults.

4. In case of failure signalling, the ABS warning light stays off for 6 seconds, then makes a first series of blinking (each half second) every one second.

Immediately after, it stays off for about 6.5 seconds, then makes a second series of blinking (each half second), and so on till finisin the detected error codes; then it stays definitely off (Fig. 23)

The number of flashes in the first and second sequence form the tens and units of the failure code respectively (22 in the example in Fig 23).

The type of failure may then be read off the code table shown on page G45.

The self-diagnosis of this ECU can simultaneously store ALL the anomalies identified by a 2 digit numeric code (11 to 79).

5. Remove the jumper.

Note: solenoid valve failures involve automatic ECU cut-out and consequent inability to store further failure codes.

If the self-diagnosis indicates solenoid valve failure, it will therefore be necessary to repair the valve immediately and road test the car in order to record and identify further failures.

The test cannot be carried out if the battery voltage is lower than 9 V +/- .05 V.

6. Memory erasure
After displaying all the anomalies and carrying out all the required repairs, remove the jumper previously placed between A and B pins, and road test the car.

When a speed of 18.5 mph (30 km/h) has been exceeded, if no further faults occur or are identified, the memory is deleted.

In the case of further anomalies, the ABS warning light comes on to show that more checks and repairs need to be carried out.

Note: the memory can be erased only if all the stored error codes up to the sequence end have been displayed at least once.

Let me know if you need me to post the failure codes.

Ohhhh, yes, it's cloudy, no, I can see now.

Installation of a fuse in a position normally open will put it in diagnostic mode. It will flash the codes like the ecu on a Motronic 2.7 car.

Thank you for joging my memory.

Rob, the WSM states there is a way to pull the codes with one of the harness plugs by the ABS Unit...a 2 wire plug & a 3 wire plug...any ideas on which one?

TIA

ps: the other deal is interesting however..well you know...;-)

I've only done it with the SD1. That's why I'm interested in the other thread: http://www.ferrarichat.com/discus/messages/112/199160.html?1043883538

Can anyone help with the procedure for pulling the trouble codes for the ABS System on a 456?

TIA
